Choose the Gaggia Classic Pro E24 if you prefer a more hands-on routine and value its 58 mm portafilter and traditional single-boiler design. Neither machine is established as a taste winner; with a single-wall basket, your grinder and puck preparation do more of the work.
What a non-pressurized basket changes
A single-wall basket lets water pass through the coffee puck without the extra flow restriction built into a dual-wall basket. That means grind size, dose, and puck preparation have a greater role in how the shot extracts. It is not a flavor shortcut: plan to use freshly ground coffee and adjust the grind and dose as needed.
Breville’s product guidance connects its espresso workflow to freshly ground beans, and its BES500 manual identifies both single-wall and dual-wall baskets. The manual specifies 8–11 g for the one-cup basket; treat that as the manufacturer’s basket guidance, not a universal dose for every coffee or basket.

These are manufacturer-listed specifications and workflow differences, not results from a controlled head-to-head taste test. Breville describes its 54 mm portafilter as delivering “full flavor” with dual- and single-wall filters; that is the company’s product claim, not independent comparative evidence.

Budget for the grinder and preparation
If you intend to use a single-wall basket, an espresso-capable grinder is a practical part of the machine budget. The beans need to be ground fresh, and the grind must be adjustable enough to help you dial in a shot. The cited manufacturer material does not establish a particular grinder model as best, so prioritize espresso-range adjustment and consistent dosing rather than buying by brand name alone.
- Check whether you already own a grinder that can grind finely and adjust in small increments for espresso.
- Expect to adjust the grind when a shot runs too quickly or too slowly; the basket itself does not create flavor.
- Keep the basket’s stated dose guidance in view, while recognizing that coffee and technique affect the useful dose.
Choose by your daily routine, not portafilter size alone
Pick the Bambino Plus if you want flexibility
The BES500 supports both basket styles, so you can use a dual-wall filter when you want a more forgiving setup and move to a single-wall basket as your grinding and puck preparation become more consistent. Its automatic and manual milk-texturing options also provide a choice between convenience and more direct control.

Pick the Gaggia if you want a traditional manual platform
The Classic Pro E24’s 58 mm portafilter and commercial-style steam wand suit buyers who want a hands-on machine. The 58 mm measurement describes the portafilter platform; it does not by itself establish better espresso than a smaller portafilter. Its single-boiler design means you will need to manage the transition between brewing and steaming.
Check before you buy
- Verify the exact model and package. For the Bambino Plus BES500, check the seller’s listing for the single-wall and dual-wall baskets actually included in your country. Breville says the machine supports both, but package contents may vary by market.
- Confirm grinder readiness. If you do not have an espresso-capable grinder, include one in the budget before choosing a single-wall workflow.
- Match milk workflow to your habits. The Bambino Plus offers automatic and manual texturing; the Gaggia lists a commercial-style steam wand and asks for a more manual approach.
- Measure the counter and work area. Check the machine’s dimensions on the current product listing and allow space for the portafilter, grinder, and milk pitcher. The manufacturer details cited here do not provide a like-for-like footprint comparison.
- Check local price, stock, and parts. Compare current listings in your market and confirm that the basket or replacement accessories you need fit the exact machine. Gaggia North America lists a 58 mm single-shot basket, but compatibility should be checked against the owner’s specific model.
What the evidence does—and does not—establish
Breville’s BES500 page and manual document basket compatibility, milk-texturing options, and one-cup basket guidance. Gaggia North America documents the E24’s listed specifications and displayed price. Those details help compare setup and workflow; they do not prove that one machine makes better-tasting espresso or is universally easier. Your grinder, coffee, preparation, and routine will shape the result.
