Sweep or vacuum first, dilute the cleaner exactly as its label directs, and keep people off the damp floor until it is dry. The right choice depends on the tile, grout, sealer, and finish, so check the floor maker’s care instructions as well.
What soap should you use to mop tile floors?
Choose a neutral-pH tile and grout cleaner for everyday cleaning. Although people often call any floor-cleaning solution “soap,” a purpose-formulated cleaner is a safer starting point than assuming dish soap, vinegar, bleach, or another household product is suitable. Some acidic, alkaline, bleach-containing, abrasive, or ammoniated cleaners may harm tile or degrade grout sealer, according to LATICRETE’s ceramic and porcelain tile care guidance.
Use warm water and a clean, nonabrasive mop, cloth, or sponge. If water alone does not remove the soil, damp-mop with a neutral cleaner diluted as its label directs. There is no universal dilution ratio: products and directions differ.

How to mop tile without scratching it or leaving a slippery floor
- Remove dry grit. Sweep, dust with a clean non-treated dry mop, or vacuum before wet cleaning. Sand and grit can scratch tile and soil grout.
- Check the floor-care instructions. Follow guidance from the tile and grout manufacturer, especially if the floor is sealed, has a specialty finish, or combines different materials.
- Prepare the cleaner as labeled. Use warm water and a clean, nonabrasive mop. If needed, apply a neutral tile and grout cleaner at the label’s specified dilution; do not guess at the ratio.
- Damp-mop the floor. Avoid saturating the surface. Rinse or change the mop as needed so it does not spread dirty water over the floor.
- Wait for the floor to dry. Wet tile may be slippery. Keep people off it until it is completely dry.
What if routine mopping leaves residue or buildup?
Identify both the flooring material and the residue before moving to a stronger treatment. LATICRETE distinguishes routine cleaning from restoration: an acidic cleaner specifically made for ceramic or porcelain may address soap scum, hard-water deposits, grout haze, or efflorescence, while an appropriately formulated alkaline cleaner may be used as a pre-clean for heavy grease and oil. These are specialty treatments, not permission to use household vinegar, bleach, or an arbitrary stronger chemical on an unknown floor.
