A novelty “onion saver” is not a substitute for choosing the right conditions.
What is the best way to store whole onions?
Whole dry bulb onions need a cool, dry place with airflow. The National Onion Association recommends storing them in a “cool, dry, well-ventilated area,” away from direct sunlight and heat. Avoid plastic bags that restrict air circulation and can reduce shelf life.
Temperature guidance differs by source: the National Onion Association gives 45–55 °F for dry bulb onions, while the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Administration lists 60–70 °F for dry storage. These are source-specific recommendations, not a single agreed range. Both point toward dry storage rather than refrigeration for whole dry onions.
Do whole onions need a special container?
No special keeper is established as necessary. If you want to organize whole bulbs, a breathable mesh produce bag is an option because it allows airflow. It does not prove that onions will stay fresh longer, and it should not be treated as a replacement for a dry, ventilated storage area.

How should you store a cut or peeled onion?
Put cut onion in a sealed food-storage container and refrigerate it. The National Onion Association’s storage guidance says to store cut onions in a sealed container for up to seven days. A standard food-safe container is a practical choice; the available guidance does not establish that a novelty onion keeper performs better.
The Association’s FAQ gives a different duration—7–10 days for chopped or sliced onion in a sealed refrigerator container at 40 °F or below, attributing that guidance to USDA. Because its own pages differ, use the shorter limit of up to seven days rather than treating the longer figure as settled advice.
