For a typical 500-square-foot room with an 8-foot ceiling, start with a 12,000 BTU/h window air conditioner. ENERGY STAR places 500 square feet in its 450–550-square-foot sizing band. The right unit may need to be smaller or larger depending on sunlight, occupants, kitchen use, ceiling height, and whether it fits your window and electrical circuit.
What size window AC do you need for 500 square feet?
ENERGY STAR recommends 12,000 BTU/h for rooms from 450 to 550 square feet, assuming an 8-foot ceiling. Measure the space you intend to cool: for a rectangular room, multiply its length by its width; for an irregular layout, split it into simpler shapes, measure each, and add the areas. This chart is a starting point, not an individualized HVAC load calculation.
Adjust the starting capacity for room conditions
- Heavy shade: Reduce the recommended capacity by 10%.
- Very sunny room: Increase it by 10%.
- More than two regular occupants: Add 600 BTU/h for each additional person.
- Kitchen use: Add 4,000 BTU/h if the air conditioner will cool a kitchen.
These adjustments can change the target significantly. For example, a very sunny 500-square-foot room starts from the 12,000 BTU/h chart value, with ENERGY STAR’s 10% increase applied; a kitchen calls for a separate 4,000 BTU/h addition. Consider the room’s actual use and layout rather than selecting a unit from floor area alone.
Why buying a much larger unit can backfire
A higher BTU rating is not automatically better. The U.S. Department of Energy warns that an oversized room air conditioner can cost more to buy and use more energy. It can also cycle on and off too quickly to remove enough moisture. ENERGY STAR notes that this may leave the room cool but damp and clammy. Match capacity to the room instead of oversizing “just in case.”

A 12,000 BTU/h example listed by ENERGY STAR
ENERGY STAR lists the Frigidaire FHWW126WF1 window air conditioner at 12,000 BTU/h with a CEER of 16.0. That makes it a listed example in the base capacity range for a typical 500-square-foot room—not a tested overall winner or a guarantee that it suits every room. Confirm the current certification listing and exact model suffix before buying; availability and product details may change.
What to compare before you buy
Once you have a capacity target, check the unit against the actual opening, electrical setup, and cooling needs. A matching BTU figure alone does not establish that a unit is suitable.
Rank #2
- BEST FOR SMALL ROOMS: Cools up to 150 sq ft efficiently with 5,000 BTU cooling power. Ideal for bedrooms, home offices, dorm rooms, workshops, and studio apartments. Compact 16.4" W x 13.4" D x 12.6" H design fits tight spaces.
- QUIET OPERATION - Quieter than many older window AC units, with 2 cooling modes (low 52 dBA for nighttime, high 56 dBA for rapid cooling) and 2 fan speeds for personalized comfort. Simple mechanical controls mean no annoying digital beeps.
- SIMPLE, RELIABLE MECHANICAL CONTROLS: Easy-to-use dials for temperature and fan speed—no Wi-Fi, apps or complex setup required. 10 temperature settings let you dial in your perfect comfort level. Auto restart after power outages.
- LOW MAINTENANCE & ENERGY SMART: No manual draining under normal conditions. Washable, reusable filter for easy care. Low 440W power draw helps reduce energy costs compared to older, inefficient units.
- EASY DIY INSTALLATION: Fixed chassis installs easily and fits double-hung windows 27.125"–36" wide and 13.375" high minimum. EZ Mount kit with foam insulation included. Backed by 1-year GE limited warranty for peace of mind.
- Capacity: Compare the rated BTU/h with your adjusted target, not just the room’s square footage.
- Efficiency: Compare CEER ratings among units of appropriate capacity. A higher value can help distinguish efficiency, but it does not establish the unit’s fit or noise level.
- Window fit: Verify the required opening dimensions and window style against the manufacturer’s current specifications and your window.
- Electrical needs: Check voltage and circuit requirements, and make sure your intended installation meets them.
- Features: Consider features that matter to your household, such as controls or operating modes, using the exact model’s specifications rather than assuming they are shared across a product line.
How to interpret DOE’s example energy cost
For an illustrative comparison, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program models a 12,000 BTU/h room air conditioner running 750 hours per year. Its ENERGY STAR example uses 612 kWh and costs $67 per year under the page’s assumptions, including 2023 dollars and efficiency data from December 2024. Those are modeled figures, not a prediction of a particular household’s bill; actual use and electricity costs vary.
