It can reduce airborne particles, including particles that may carry respiratory viruses, but it cannot protect a household by itself. Think of filtration as one layer of cleaner-air practices, not a guarantee against infection.
What is the best home air purifier for COVID-19?
Choose a portable HEPA air cleaner sized to the actual room, using its smoke clean air delivery rate (CADR) as the main comparison figure. Smoke CADR is the most relevant of the three common CADR ratings for viral particles because smoke particles are the smallest. A higher CADR delivers more filtered air and can clean a room faster.
There is no specific model recommendation here: a useful model-by-model ranking requires current evidence about each unit’s CADR, room-size assumptions, filter compatibility, upkeep and other real-use trade-offs. EPA identifies a HEPA designation, a smoke CADR rating, or a manufacturer statement that most particles in the 0.1–1 micrometre range are removed as relevant selection criteria for a room-sized cleaner. A particle-removal percentage alone does not establish that a device eliminates infection risk.
How do I size an air purifier for my room?
Measure the space the cleaner must serve
Multiply the room’s length by its width to find its floor area. If the unit is meant to serve an open-plan area, include the connected space rather than sizing it only for the corner where it sits. For ceilings higher than 8 feet, account for the additional room volume by choosing greater capacity or a larger stated room size.

For an 8-foot ceiling, EPA’s approximate sizing guidance gives these minimum CADR values:

These are estimates, not health-outcome thresholds. For example, CDC/NIOSH says a 300-square-foot room with an 11-foot ceiling should be treated as about 415 square feet for room-size selection (300 × 11/8). For a large or open area, consider more than one unit.

Check how the advertised room size was determined
Manufacturer room-size or airflow figures can be based on ideal conditions and may overstate performance in an actual room. Compare smoke CADR with the area and ceiling height the cleaner needs to serve, rather than relying only on a room-size claim on the box.
Where should I put the purifier, and how should I run it?
Put the cleaner in the room where people spend the most time, especially where someone vulnerable spends time. Leave its intake and outlet clear so air can circulate, and aim the airflow so it does not blow directly from one person toward another. If the unit has several fan speeds, choose a setting you can keep running while the room is occupied; a higher speed may clean faster, but practical use depends on whether the airflow can remain unobstructed and acceptable in the space.

Keep up with the manufacturer’s filter replacement instructions and make sure the correct replacement filter is available for the exact model. EPA notes that dirty or overloaded filters do not work well. A replacement filter is only a suitable purchase when it is compatible with the purifier in use.
Can home HVAC filtration add another layer?
If your home has central HVAC, EPA suggests using a MERV 13 filter—or the highest-efficiency filter the system can accommodate. Filtration through HVAC occurs only while the system runs; consult an HVAC professional if you are unsure what filter your system can handle. CDC also recommends pleated filters and setting the central fan to “on” rather than “auto” when visitors are present.

A portable cleaner can filter air in its room independently of HVAC runtime. Combining it with suitable HVAC filtration can add another cleaner-air layer, but neither option by itself guarantees protection.

A 2021 CDC conference-room experiment using respiratory simulators found that two HEPA air cleaners meeting EPA-recommended CADR reduced overall exposure to simulated exhaled aerosol particles by up to 65% without universal masking. That result measured simulated particle exposure in an experiment; it was not a household infection trial and does not show that a specific commercial model reduces COVID-19 infections by 65%.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency states: “By itself, a portable air cleaner is not enough to protect people from COVID-19.” Its Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home also says: “No air cleaner or filter will eliminate all of the air pollutants in your home.” Use a purifier as one part of a combined approach to cleaner indoor air, not as a standalone safeguard.
