Engineered outdoor acoustic curtain systems are a different category: heavier products designed for noise-control applications such as equipment enclosures and construction sites. Their laboratory ratings do not predict how much quieter an open residential patio will be.
Can outdoor curtains make a patio quieter?
They may soften a space’s feel, but the available evidence does not establish a measured noise reduction from ordinary residential patio curtains. HGTV describes NICETOWN outdoor curtains as polyester panels with a grommet header and built-in thermal backing, and characterizes that backing as intended to combat noise when the curtains are drawn. The roundup gives no acoustic test result, so that description is not verified decibel reduction. It also notes that the fabric can fade in sunlight and snag. See HGTV’s outdoor-curtain roundup.
That distinction matters: a thermal backing is a product feature, not proof of sound isolation. Patio curtains remain a reasonable choice for shade, privacy and light blocking; a claim that they will block a particular amount of noise is not supported by the cited residential listing.
Two very different kinds of outdoor curtains
| Category | Designed for | What the evidence supports | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Decorative residential patio curtains | Shade, privacy and light control | HGTV lists polyester NICETOWN curtains with a grommet header and thermal backing. | No acoustic test result is provided for the residential product. |
| Engineered exterior acoustic systems | Noise-control applications such as equipment enclosures, construction and noisy buildings | Manufacturers publish construction details and laboratory ratings for specific models. | Those ratings are not a prediction of noise reduction on an open or leaky home patio. |
Acoustical Surfaces says its exterior-grade faced quilted fiberglass absorbers are used to reduce reverberant noise in permanent outdoor applications such as enclosing HVAC equipment or dust collectors where UV resistance is needed. That is a specialist industrial use, not evidence that the product is an ordinary patio drape. Review its QFA exterior absorber information.

What acoustic ratings do—and do not—tell you
Manufacturers report ratings for particular constructions and test methods. STC is a laboratory rating associated with sound transmission loss; NRC describes sound absorption. They are not interchangeable, and neither is a direct measure of the decibel reduction a resident will hear from a curtain on a patio. ODL explains that sound can leak through gaps in building assemblies, but its door-and-glass information is not curtain test evidence. See ODL’s performance explanation.
| Manufacturer and model | Reported rating | Other stated details |
|---|---|---|
| Acoustical Surfaces, 2-inch exterior absorber | STC 21; NRC 0.70 | Manufacturer reports ASTM C 423 absorption data and ASTM E-90 and E 413 transmission-loss data. Product page. |
| IES-2000, BA-EXT-N-2-inch | STC 32; NRC 0.85 | Manufacturer labels its transmission-loss table ASTM E-90 and E 413, calls the data informational, and lists a weight of 1.45 lb/sq ft. Product page. |
| Sound Seal, BBC-13X | STC 27; NRC 0.70 | Model-specific outdoor product data. Product page. |

| Sound Seal, BBC-EXT-N-2-inch | STC 32; NRC 0.85 | Model-specific outdoor product data. Product page. |
| Sound Seal, BBC-EXT-R | STC 29; NRC 0.65 | Manufacturer describes EXT-R models for long-term or permanent outdoor applications and states a 10+ year outdoor lifespan. Product page. |
| Sound Seal, BBC-EXT-R-2-inch | STC 33; NRC 0.75 | Manufacturer describes EXT-R models for long-term or permanent outdoor applications and states a 10+ year outdoor lifespan. Product page. |
The cited product pages do not state publication years. Their figures apply to the named constructions and referenced laboratory methods; they should not be transferred to residential curtains or treated as a ranking of likely patio performance.

How to choose patio curtains for shade and privacy
If the goal is a more usable patio rather than a tested acoustic barrier, compare the curtains as outdoor furnishings. The HGTV listing supports checking the following practical details:
- Purpose: Decide whether you need shade, privacy, or light blocking, and choose fabric and backing accordingly.
- Fit and hanging: Check panel dimensions and grommet compatibility with the rod or track you have.
- Outdoor durability: Consider exposure to direct sunlight, moisture and snagging; the cited coverage specifically warns that the NICETOWN fabric can fade and snag.
- Noise claims: Treat “noise-reducing” or thermal-backed language as a feature description unless the seller supplies relevant acoustic test data for the exact product.
A cautious retailer search phrase is “thermal-backed outdoor patio curtains.” Use them for the functions the residential listing actually describes, not as a substitute for a tested sound-control system.

What to check before considering an engineered system
Exterior acoustic systems are aimed at defined noise-control installations, not casual patio decoration. Acoustical Surfaces’ QFA exterior absorbers, IES-2000’s barrier-backed BA-EXT-N systems and Sound Seal’s BBC exterior range are examples of specialist products. Their specifications and formats differ by model; consult the manufacturer about suitability for a specific site.
- Purpose and construction: Establish whether you need an absorber, a barrier, or a composite system; check the exact facing, absorber thickness and any loaded-vinyl barrier.
- Relevant test data: Review frequency-specific transmission-loss data and its test method alongside STC and NRC where supplied. Do not choose on the highest STC or NRC alone.
- Weight and support: Confirm the model’s weight and have the mounting structure reviewed. IES-2000 lists its BA-EXT-N-2-inch product at 1.45 lb/sq ft; Sound Seal lists products ranging from 1.20 to 2.45 lb/sq ft.
- Outdoor exposure: Check facing materials, UV or weather resistance, temperature range and model-specific lifespan. Sound Seal, for example, distinguishes models stated to last 2–3 years outdoors from EXT-R models stated to last 10+ years. These are manufacturer statements, not independent longevity trials.
- Installation details: Verify panel dimensions, grommets or track, joining method and how edges will be treated. The manufacturers describe systems using grommets, modular panels, or grommets with vertical hook-and-loop seals.
- Project requirements: Ask whether the manufacturer requires a site-specific design, structural review or installation quote.
Specific constructions and ratings are available from IES-2000 and Sound Seal. Their stated product weights and lifespans are model-specific; do not assume that one specification applies across a product range.

Why an open patio is a difficult place to control noise
A curtain does not form a complete enclosure when sound can travel around its top, sides or bottom. Specialist systems may use joining seals, and ODL notes that cracks can undermine sound reduction in building partitions; neither source quantifies the effect of those gaps for a residential patio. Full coverage and attention to edge gaps are sensible design considerations, not a guaranteed performance formula.
For a defined equipment or construction noise problem, ask an acoustic-product manufacturer or qualified professional to assess the source, layout, mounting structure and coverage needed. A laboratory rating for a curtain construction alone cannot establish the result at a particular home.
