A remote-control space heater can make it easier to adjust warmth without reaching down to floor-level controls. But the remote is a convenience, not a safety feature: compare how well a heater warms a room, how its thermostat and timer work, how much noise it makes, and what protections and independent safety certification it has. The available evidence supports a useful manufacturer-listed example, but not a tested ranking of the “best” models.
What makes a remote-control heater worth considering?
Consumer Reports says a remote can be useful because a space heater is safest kept on the floor, where reaching down to operate it may be inconvenient. The Consumer Product Safety Commission’s 2023 consumer research report likewise describes remote control as a desirable accessibility and convenience feature. Neither source says a remote makes a heater safer to operate.
Start with the heater’s performance and fit for the room, then consider whether the remote controls the functions you actually use. Consumer Reports, in a guide updated April 22, 2026, describes evaluating how heaters warm a standard-sized room and a nearby person, as well as noise and fire-safety factors. Those are useful comparison dimensions; they are not test results for the example below.
Compare the features that affect everyday use
- Heater type and room use: Check the product’s stated use and whether its form factor suits the space. A tower or console design may take up less floor area than a wider unit, but shape alone does not establish heating performance.
- Heating performance: Look for independent testing that describes room size and conditions. Do not treat a manufacturer’s heat-setting count as proof that a model warms a room effectively.
- Thermostat and heat settings: Compare the available settings and how temperature adjustment works. A thermostat is useful only if the controls let you set the warmth you want.
- Remote functions: Check whether the remote adjusts heat and thermostat settings, controls oscillation, or operates the timer. A remote may control fewer functions than the heater’s onboard panel.
- Timer and oscillation: These can make operation more convenient, but confirm the specific controls on the model rather than assuming they are included.
- Noise and portability: Seek independent noise information if quiet operation matters. Consider the heater’s size and whether it is practical to move; do not move it while operating or hot.
- Safety protections and certification: Look for tip-over and overheat protection, and verify a recognized third-party certification mark on the unit or its documentation. A product listing or manufacturer statement alone is not independent proof of certification.
A documented example: Lasko Motion X CC27350
Lasko’s official product page describes the 27-inch Motion X ceramic console space heater, model CC27350, as having a remote control, three heat settings, a thermostat, a timer, a tip-over switch, a child lock, and overheat protection. These are features listed by the manufacturer, not independent test findings. Confirm the current listing and the actual certification mark before buying; product details and availability can change.

Safety guidance for portable heaters in the United States
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s January 23, 2026 release advises keeping portable heaters at least three feet from drapes, furniture, bedding, and other combustible materials. It also advises plugging electric heaters directly into a wall outlet—not an extension cord or power strip—and turning them off when sleeping.

CPSC estimates that portable heaters, including electric space heaters, were involved in an average of 1,600 fires per year, with an average of 70 deaths and 150 injuries annually, during 2020–2022. These are estimates for that measured period, not counts for 2026.
UL 1278 is the voluntary standard CPSC identifies for movable and wall- or ceiling-hung electric room heaters. Check the appliance and its documentation for the relevant certification information rather than assuming a model meets the standard because a listing mentions it.

Check the Govee heater recall before buying or using a smart heater
Do not buy or recommend the recalled GoveeLife and Govee smart electric space heaters named in CPSC’s November 7, 2024 recall: models H7130 (including H7130101), H7131, H7132, H7133, H7134, and H7135. CPSC says testing found noncompliance with the voluntary UL 1278 standard and identified overheating, fire, and burn hazards associated with wireless-control features. The stated remedy is a refund. If you own one of these models, follow the current CPSC and manufacturer recall instructions.
