These tools solve different parts of the problem, so match the device to the step you find hardest.
Why jar lids can be hard to open
Many metal jar lids are vacuum sealed. As hot contents cool, the air inside contracts and holds the lid down, increasing the force needed to turn it. Wide grip spans and slick surfaces can make both holding the jar and twisting its lid harder. Consumer NZ explains the vacuum-seal effect, while the Arthritis Foundation’s packaging guidance identifies grip span, surface friction and opening torque as relevant design factors.
The Arthritis Foundation recommends a grip span under 2.5 inches for jar and lid as a packaging-design guideline—not a universal limit for people’s hands or a specification for opener compatibility. Its guidance also favors sufficient lid height, high-friction surfaces and low opening torque. Read the Arthritis Foundation’s Optimum Jar Design Guidelines.
Which type of jar opener should you choose?
| Tool | What it helps with | What you still need to do | Useful caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Silicone or rubber grip disk | Adds friction between your hand and the lid. | Grip and twist the lid. | It improves grip but does not release the vacuum seal. |
| Manual multi-size opener | Provides a more secure hold on a lid. | Operate the tool and turn the lid. | Which? reported that the Brabantia Tasty+ Universal Opener worked well and felt secure and comfortable in its test, but left lids slightly scratched or dented. |
| Jar key or seal breaker | Pops the vacuum seal, making the lid easier to turn. | Twist the lid after breaking the seal. | It addresses the seal, not necessarily the grip or turning effort. |
| Non-slip mat | Reduces the effort needed to keep the jar steady. | Hold and turn the lid, or use another opener. | It is a complement to a lid opener or jar key. |
| Battery-powered hands-free opener | Loosens a lid at the press of a button, reducing the need to grip and twist. | Set it on the jar and operate it according to its instructions. | Check lid-size compatibility and battery requirements for the individual model. |
Best picks by the problem you need to solve
For a better grip while you twist: silicone disk
A reusable silicone or rubber disk is a straightforward choice if you can turn the lid but need more traction. Which? found its tested silicone disk effective and comfortable, including for its tester with restricted hand movement. It was thin enough to store in a drawer. It does not remove the need to twist.

Which? found the Brabantia Tasty+ Universal Opener worked well and offered a secure, comfortable grip. Its test also found slight scratches or dents on each jar lid, which matters if you plan to reuse jars. The report lists UK retailer availability, but does not establish current price or stock.
For a stubborn vacuum seal: jar key
A jar key is designed to pop the vacuum seal so the lid is easier to twist off. Arthritis Society Canada describes it as a way to release the seal before turning the lid. If your main obstacle is the seal rather than holding or turning, this targets that step; it does not guarantee that you can open the lid without twisting.

For keeping the jar steady: non-slip mat
Put a non-slip mat beneath the jar to reduce the effort needed to hold it in place. It can be paired with a grip disk or jar key: the mat steadies the jar, while the other tool helps with the lid.
For difficulty gripping and twisting: battery-powered opener
Arthritis Society Canada lists a battery-powered, hands-free opener as an option when gripping and twisting are painful or difficult. It sits on top of the jar and loosens the lid when activated. Check the model’s compatible lid sizes and battery requirements before buying; the guidance describes the device type rather than testing a particular model.

Household methods: what may help, and what to avoid
Which? tested a rubber glove, cling film and an elastic band as ways to add grip. Its report says these methods can help, but found cling film less comfortable and more wasteful than a rubber glove, while elastic bands could slip or be fiddly. Tapping a lid or jar may help release a seal, but can cause discomfort for people with restricted hand movement. It is not a universal recommendation.
How to choose without buying the wrong opener
- Identify the difficult step: Is the challenge getting traction on the lid, breaking the seal, steadying the jar or supplying the twist?
- Check the work the tool leaves to you: A grip disk and jar key still require turning; a mat helps stabilize the jar; a hands-free opener may reduce both gripping and twisting.
- Confirm size compatibility: Check the opener’s stated lid-size range against the jars you use. Do not assume a test dimension or a generic “arthritis” label establishes fit for you.
- Consider setup and upkeep: A disk or mat is simple to use, while a battery-powered device requires batteries. Follow the particular product’s instructions.
- Think about jar reuse: A manual opener that grips tightly may mark lids; Which? reported scratches or dents from the tested Brabantia model.
- Use combinations when needed: A mat and jar key address different tasks, as do a mat and grip disk. One tool need not solve every part of opening.
What the opener tests establish
Consumer NZ’s 23 December 2022 comparison tried products on jars with 85 mm, 65 mm and 58 mm lids, and on bottle caps from 28 mm to 40 mm where relevant. Those are dimensions used in its test, not universal compatibility ranges. Its stated criteria were ease of operation, ease of opening (weighted twice) and adaptability. Prices in that article were what Consumer NZ paid in October 2022, so they should not be treated as current prices. See Consumer NZ’s test and criteria.
