For homemade ice cream without freezing a bowl in advance, choose a compressor ice cream maker: its built-in cooling system chills the mixture as the dasher churns it. The Whynter ICM-201SB is a practical large-batch option, while the Lello Musso Lussino is a premium alternative. Neither is a universal best choice; capacity, footprint, weight, cleanup and budget matter.
What “built-in freezer” means
In this category, “built-in freezer” usually means a compressor ice cream maker. The machine cools the base inside its bowl while churning, so there is no removable freezer bowl to freeze ahead. Whynter’s ICM-201SB manual describes continuous use without pre-freezing the bowl. This workflow suits people who want to make a batch on demand or churn more than one batch without waiting for a bowl to refreeze.
Two other popular approaches are not equivalent. A freezer-bowl machine relies on a canister that must be frozen before use. A frozen-pint processor works from a base frozen in advance and processes it in a separate appliance workflow; it does not chill and churn liquid mix like a compressor machine.
Compressor ice cream makers to compare
| Model | Freezing workflow | Capacity | Practical trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whynter ICM-201SB | Built-in compressor freezes while churning; its manual says bowl pre-freezing is unnecessary. | 2.1 quarts (2 liters), per the Whynter manual. | Removable bowl helps with cleaning, but the machine is heavy and its paddle can be awkward to scrape, according to Bon Appétit’s 2026 comparison. |
| Lello Musso Lussino | Compressor chills and churns without a pre-frozen canister. | 1.5 quarts, as reported by Epicurious. | A premium, heavy machine with a fixed bowl that makes cleaning less convenient; Epicurious describes its test results favorably. |
| Cuisinart ICE-21 | Freezer-bowl workflow; Epicurious says the bowl needs at least 24 hours of freezing. | 1.5 quarts, according to Epicurious. | A lower-cost-style alternative to consider only if advance freezing and freezer space are acceptable; it is not a built-in-freezer machine. |
| Ninja CREAMi | Freeze the base first, then process it in the appliance. Epicurious notes it has no internal cooling mechanism. | Not stated in the cited Epicurious comparison. | A different workflow, so its processing time is not directly comparable to compressor churning. |
Whynter ICM-201SB: the practical large-batch candidate
Whynter’s manual, marked 2018, lists the ICM-201SB at 2.1 quarts (2 liters), with dimensions of 12.5 inches wide by 10.75 inches deep by 14.25 inches high, a net weight of 24.25 pounds, and a 110–120 V / 60 Hz power supply. These are specifications for this model and the market covered by that manual, not universal figures for Whynter machines. Check the exact model suffix and electrical rating where you live.
#1 Best Overall
- Large Batch Capacity: The Whynter Automatic Ice Cream Maker churns up to 2.1 quarts at once, with an LCD control panel and built-in audible timer that show exactly where a batch stands
- No Pre-Freezing Needed: A self-contained, CFC-free compressor chills the mixture as it churns, so you can make batch after batch without freezing a bowl overnight
- Homemade Frozen Treats: Create delicious frozen desserts with the ingredients you choose, giving you more control over every batch than you get from store-bought options
- Stainless Steel Housing: A durable stainless steel shell wipes clean in seconds and stands up to everyday use, while the sleek, compact design saves valuable counter space
- Whynter Difference: Designed to redefine everyday comfort with portable, high-quality appliances backed by innovation, efficiency, and dependable performance
The removable bowl is a useful design advantage when transferring a finished batch or washing up. However, Bon Appétit’s 2026 hands-on testing calls out a paddle that can be difficult to scrape and notes the appliance’s weight. Allow for the machine’s footprint and mass before buying, especially if you expect to move it between uses.
Lello Musso Lussino: a premium alternative
Epicurious’s 2024 guide reports a 1.5-quart capacity and 38-pound weight for the Lello Musso Lussino. It describes the machine’s results positively, while identifying its high cost, heavy build and non-removable bowl as meaningful trade-offs. Its smaller stated capacity and fixed bowl make it a different proposition from the Whynter, even though both use compressor cooling.

- CNN Best Ice Cream Maker: The Whynter Upright Automatic Ice Cream Maker was recognized by CNN in 2026 as a Best Tested maker for ice cream and more
- Upright Space Saving Build: This ice cream maker stands tall, fitting your gelato or sorbet into a stainless steel housing with a smaller counter footprint
- No Pre Freeze Compressor: A self-contained compressor freezes the mix as it churns, so no bowl waits in the freezer overnight and a second batch can follow the first the same afternoon
- LCD Timer Control: An easy-to-read LCD control panel displays the run time at a glance, while the built-in audible timer signals when your batch is ready
- Removable Stainless Bowl: The stainless bowl lifts out for serving and washing, and the BPA-free churn blade comes apart for a rinse rather than a full disassembly at the sink
Which workflow fits your kitchen?
Choose a compressor machine if you want to churn on demand
- You do not want to reserve freezer space for a canister or remember to freeze one ahead.
- You value the option to start a batch when the base is ready, rather than planning around a frozen bowl.
- You have counter or storage space for a substantial appliance and are comfortable with its weight.
Choose a freezer-bowl model if advance planning is acceptable
The Cuisinart ICE-21 illustrates this lower-cost-style alternative, but it does not have a built-in freezer. Epicurious says its bowl needs 24 hours or more in the freezer. That makes it a poor fit if you specifically need a compressor workflow, but potentially suitable if you can plan ahead and have enough freezer space.
Consider a frozen-base processor only for its distinct workflow
The Ninja CREAMi is not a compressor churner: freeze the base first, then process it. It may suit someone seeking that workflow, but it should not be treated as a like-for-like alternative when comparing compressor churn times or the ability to chill liquid mix in the machine.

Check before buying
- Batch size: Match the stated bowl capacity to how much you want to make at once; the listed Whynter capacity is larger than the Lello and Cuisinart capacities cited here.
- Space and handling: Compare dimensions and weight with the space where the machine will live. Compressor models are substantial appliances, not necessarily easy to put away after each use.
- Cleanup: Check whether the bowl removes. A removable bowl can make cleaning simpler; a fixed bowl can constrain access.
- Electrical compatibility: Confirm the voltage and frequency on the exact unit sold in your market.
- Current terms: Prices, stock, model suffixes and warranties vary by market and date. Confirm them with the seller and manufacturer before purchase; no current price or availability is established here.
