The best full-size washer and dryer set is the one that fits your laundry space and installation, handles the loads you actually wash, and works with your home’s power, fuel, and venting. The available guidance supports these buying criteria, but not a current model-by-model verdict naming one pair as best for every household.
Start with the laundry space and delivery route
Measure the machines’ intended location and the route from the entrance to that space before comparing models. Most full-size washers are about 27 inches wide, but dimensions vary; front-loaders tend to be deeper, while top-loaders are often a little taller. Check the exact product dimensions, including doors, controls, and trim, rather than relying on the category label. - Measure the doorway, hallways, stairs, and turns along the delivery route.
- Allow at least 6 inches behind the washer for water hookups and about an inch between the washer and dryer, as Consumer Reports advises.
- Check door swing, control access, dryer vent path, and any clearance needed to open lids or doors.
- For a stacked installation, confirm the exact models are approved to stack and identify the required kit and total installed height.
Choose a washer configuration and capacity that suit your loads
Front-load or top-load?
Front-load, top-load agitator, and high-efficiency top-load washers differ in loading style, dimensions, and available models. Choose based on the space, preferred loading position, and the verified specifications of the particular machines you are considering. Do not assume that all washers in one configuration share the same capacity or performance.
How much capacity do you need?
Start with ordinary weekly laundry, then account for bulky bedding and towels. In Consumer Reports’ tests, washers with capacity above 4.5 cubic feet fit a king-size comforter. That is a test-based guide, not a guarantee that every comforter will fit in every washer above that capacity; consult the exact machine’s specifications and instructions.

Match the dryer to the home’s fuel, power, and exhaust
Conventional electric and gas dryers vent moisture outside. Ventless condensing and heat-pump dryers do not require an exhaust vent, but they need a reservoir or drain to handle removed moisture. Consumer Reports notes that ventless models generally take longer to dry. Before choosing, verify the available electrical service, gas connection if applicable, vent route, drain or reservoir needs, and the manufacturer’s installation requirements.
These are installation constraints, not minor preferences: a dryer must be compatible with the home’s hookups and the space’s exhaust arrangement. Check the exact installation instructions for both machines before purchase.

Confirm compatibility for the exact model numbers, including stacking hardware where relevant. Check current ENERGY STAR certification and compare like-for-like published efficiency measures. ENERGY STAR identifies Integrated Modified Energy Factor and Integrated Water Factor for washers, and Combined Energy Factor for dryers; a higher dryer Combined Energy Factor indicates greater efficiency.
