Choose an eco dishwasher tablet by checking the exact product’s certification, cleaning-performance evidence, ingredients, packaging, and instructions—not by relying on the word “eco” alone. The EU Ecolabel offers a formal framework for assessing environmental criteria and cleaning fitness, but products, licences, ingredients, and availability can vary by country and change over time.
What makes a dishwasher tablet a credible eco choice?
“Eco” is not one standardized formula or a guarantee that every product has the same environmental profile. A stronger starting point is a current, verifiable product-level ecolabel. The European Commission says the EU Ecolabel criteria for household dishwasher detergents address limited use of hazardous substances, sustainably sourced raw materials, and recyclable packaging. The criteria document also includes biodegradability limits and cleaning-performance requirements.
The Commission’s criteria page says the current criteria are valid through 31 December 2026, with revision ongoing as of the page’s research date. Check the current status when shopping after that date. European Commission: EU Ecolabel – Cleaning
The official catalogue lists licensed products and companies, including examples such as Ecozone and Frosch tablet products. A catalogue entry is evidence of a listing, not proof of local retail stock, a universal formulation, or availability outside the listed market. Verify the exact product and licence in the EU Ecolabel dishwasher-detergent catalogue.

How to compare eco dishwasher tablets
1. Verify the exact product’s certification
Look for the ecolabel on the product and confirm that the precise tablet—not merely the brand—is included in the current catalogue. Formulations and licences may differ by market or product line.
2. Check how cleaning performance is established
Environmental credentials matter only if the detergent also cleans adequately under its specified conditions. The EU Ecolabel criteria require satisfactory cleaning at the manufacturer’s lowest recommended temperature and dosage for the relevant water hardness, using the specified standard test framework. The Commission’s formal wording says: “The product shall have a satisfactory cleaning performance at the lowest temperature and dosage recommended by the manufacturer for the water hardness in accordance with the most updated IKW standard test or the most updated standard EN 50242/EN 60436 as modified in ‘Framework performance test for dishwasher detergents’ available on the EU Ecolabel website.” This is a certification criterion, not a promise of identical results in every machine or load. 3. Read the ingredients for the individual tablet
Ingredient information can differ between products from the same brand. If you prefer to avoid added scent, check the precise product’s ingredient list for fragrance rather than assuming a whole brand is fragrance-free. Ingredient screening is not a complete toxicological risk assessment, and labels such as “natural” or “plant-based” do not by themselves establish that a product is safer or more sustainable.
4. Inspect both layers of packaging
Check the outer pack material and the single-dose wrapper separately. A soluble wrapper is not automatically recyclable; follow the product’s local disposal guidance and your local recycling rules. Packaging claims and disposal routes can vary by location.

5. Follow the product’s use instructions
Check that the tablet is intended for your dishwasher and follow its directions for placement, water hardness, temperature, and dosage. Do not assume that one brand’s instructions apply to another product.
What the Danish ingredient review can—and cannot—tell you
In a review published on 16 March 2026, Forbrugerrådet Tænk, the Danish Consumer Council, assessed 40 dishwasher detergents purchased in Denmark: 31 tablets, four powders, and five liquid detergents. Seventeen received its top ingredient rating. This was an ingredient review, not a cleaning-performance trial, and Tænk says it did not account for the concentration of substances in products. - Tænk reported fragrance in half of the detergents it reviewed. It says fragrance serves a scent purpose rather than improving cleaning; this finding applies to its Danish sample.
- One of the 40 products contained trisodium nitrilotriacetate, which Tænk describes as suspected of being carcinogenic. Tænk also says exposure from a dishwasher tablet does not pose a health risk in its assessment; the finding should not be read as evidence that the product presents a demonstrated consumer risk.
- Seven products contained benzotriazole, which Tænk identifies as a suspected endocrine disruptor and describes as difficult to break down in the environment.
Tænk’s ratings can differ among products from one brand. Use the review as a reason to inspect product-level information, not as a universal ranking or proof that every eco-labelled product is free of ingredients of concern.

Ecozone’s Classic Dishwasher Tablets product page says to place the tablet on the dishwasher floor, leave its soluble packaging on, and not put it in the dispenser. The manufacturer identifies a recycled-cardboard outer pack and a soluble PET/PVOH wrapper, and advises checking local recycling guidance. These are manufacturer-provided details for that product, not general directions for other tablets or an independent assessment of the wrapper’s environmental fate. How to make a practical choice
Start with a certified product listed for your market, then compare its current ingredient information, packaging, and use instructions. Confirm that its cleaning-performance evidence and recommended dose suit your water conditions. Before buying, check the current product page and local availability; certification, ingredients, and pack formats can change.
