For access-control hardware, choose an electrified power-transfer hinge. For a door that opens automatically, choose a powered swing-door operator—and treat the hinge, if needed, as a separate part of the system.
What an electric hinge does—and what it does not do
An electrified power-transfer hinge carries electrical power or signals across the hinge area between a door frame and the door. That can support electrified locks, access-control devices, or monitoring. Hager describes its electric hinge as a way to monitor door opening and transfer power from frame to door in its 2024 commercial hinges catalog.
The hinge is not a motor. If the goal is for a pedestrian door to open without someone pushing or pulling it, the relevant product is a swing-door operator. EPCO’s auto swing-door operator brochure illustrates this separate category. Some installations may need both an operator for movement and a power-transfer hinge for electrified hardware; they are not substitutes.
Which product category fits your project?
| Need | Product category | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Power or signals across the door/frame joint | Electrified power-transfer hinge | Routes conductors through the hinge area for compatible electrified hardware. |
| Automatic opening of a pedestrian swing door | Powered swing-door operator | Supplies the movement that swings the door open; it may be paired with other hardware. |
SDC Security’s PTH Series is an example of the first category. It is a product to evaluate, not evidence that one model is best for every job.

- 【Electric Transfer】Electric Transfer Door Hinge integrates dynamic mechanical structure with static electrical function, achieving stable and concealed power and data transmission during continuous opening and closing movements. After installation and connection to external devices, it can continuously integrate smart screens, lights, sensors and other electronic devices, making home intelligence convenient for your life
- 【Exquisitely Made】Whole Hinge made of 304 Stainless Steel, It provides anti-rust and anti-corrosion capabilities, enabling the door hinges to work stably. The wire wrapping material uses Teflon, which combines heat resistance, chemical inertness, excellent insulation stability and low friction, providing a safer and more stable user experience
- 【Application Scenarios】Electric hinges can be controlled by a remote control, sensors or other automated devices. After opening the door, it can be opened by sensing the lights, curtains and other appliances. They can also be remotely controlled through smart locks, doorbells, walkie-talkies, etc. In smart home and high-end residential scenarios, as well as office and commercial Settings, experiences such as contactless passage and automatic door opening can be achieved
- 【Detailed Description】Size: 4-1/2 in *4-1/2 in ; Thickness: 3.3 mm (0.13 in) ; Square Corner ; Bright Silver ; 4-Wire ; 24 Volts ; Hinge: 304 Stainless Steel ; Screws: 201 Stainless Steel ; Round cover: Nylon material ; Outer insulation material for wires: Teflon ; Wire: Silver-Plated Aluminum
- 【Package Includes】1* Electric Transfer Hinge ; 8* Screws ; NOTE: This hinge does not come with sensors, not come with RF signal receivers, not come withremote controls, When choosing an externally connected device, please fully consider the applicable voltage of the product. One function should be controlled by at least two wires on one side. Our four-line system can have up to two functions at most
How to choose a power-transfer hinge
Start with the electrified hardware and the door assembly, then check the hinge’s exact specifications against both. Manufacturer catalogs identify relevant constraints, but they are product descriptions rather than independent comparative test results.
- Confirm the function. Identify the lock, reader, monitoring device, or other equipment that needs power or signals through the door. If the door must move automatically, specify an operator separately.
- Verify electrical requirements. Check the required current and voltage, conductor count, and the hinge’s rated capacity against the connected hardware. Hager flags amperage rating as a selection factor; ASSA ABLOY/McKinney cautions in its hinges project catalogue that transfer is limited by wire capacity. Confirm values for the exact model in current product documentation.
- Match the physical installation. Compare hinge dimensions, finish, door preparation, and available space with the existing or specified door and frame. Do not assume that a product fits because it is described as a power-transfer hinge.
- Check hardware and assembly compatibility. Confirm compatibility with the electrified lock or other devices, and verify any applicable door-rating requirements for the assembly. The available product materials do not establish a universal compatibility list; obtain confirmation for the specific combination.
- Review the complete door system. If an operator is part of the project, assess the door, operator, controls, and safety provisions together rather than treating the hinge as the automation system.
Safety and standards depend on the door application
For US pedestrian doors, the U.S. Access Board’s ADA Accessibility Standards page points to ANSI/BHMA A156.10 for full-powered automatic doors and A156.19 for low-energy and power-assisted doors. BHMA’s listing for ANSI/BHMA A156.10-2024 identifies the full-powered automatic-door standard. Requirements depend on the application and jurisdiction; confirm which provisions apply to the installation.

The BHMA listing for A156.19 describes provisions for swing operators intended to reduce injury or entrapment and improve accessibility. That standard concerns low-energy and power-assisted doors, not the electrical transfer function of a hinge.
Other standards have narrower scopes. IEC describes IEC 60335-2-103:2023 as covering safety of electric drives for specified gates, doors, garage doors, and windows within its stated rated-voltage scope; its listing says it does not apply to pedestrian-door movement based solely on stored energy. IEC 60730-2-12:2025, the fourth edition, sets particular requirements for electrically operated door locks, with stated scope and exclusions. Whether either standard applies to a finished door system must be determined for that system.

Do not apply residential garage-door rules to pedestrian swing doors. The U.S. CPSC says automatic residential garage-door operators must comply with 16 CFR Part 1211; that is a garage-operator requirement, not a general pedestrian-door standard. See the CPSC FAQ.

There is no established universal best model or like-for-like performance ranking here. The manufacturers and catalogs provide relevant products and selection constraints, but do not establish comparative test results for cycle life, failure rates, or time saved. Choose by the actual task, confirmed capacity, fit, compatibility, and system requirements—not by an unsupported overall ranking.

Useful search terms include “electric power transfer hinge” and “electrified power transfer hinge.” Treat product listings as candidates, then verify conductor count, electrical ratings, dimensions, finish, door preparation, and hardware compatibility in the documentation for the exact model.
