Fire pit safety: a tabletop fuel warning and recall checks
Avoid open-bowl pooled-liquid-fuel designs
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says, “CPSC is urging consumers not to buy or use fire pits meant to burn pooled alcohol or other liquid fuel.” The warning concerns fire pits that require pouring liquid fuel into an open bowl or container and igniting it at that same location. CPSC says the design can cause pool fires and flame jetting and violates voluntary standard ASTM F3363-19. Its 2025 alert reported two deaths and at least 60 injuries since 2019 in connection with this hazard category; those figures do not describe all fire pits. Read the CPSC alert before buying a tabletop model.
Check alerts for the exact product
On July 16, 2026, CPSC warned consumers to stop using and dispose of named Houswise tabletop fire pits. The agency reported more than two dozen reports involving flame jetting, leaking fuel, or unexpectedly high flames, with seven injuries, including third-degree burns.
