More outlets do not mean more electrical capacity. For a cluster of indoor devices at one location, a power strip may be the better category; for added reach, choose a suitable extension cord and use it temporarily.
First decide whether you need reach or more receptacles
An extension cord solves a distance problem. A household extension cord has receptacles molded into the cord itself. A power strip, also called a relocatable power tap, is a flexible-cord-connected enclosure with multiple outlets; it is intended to let several products draw from one outlet in an indoor location. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) distinguishes these categories in its extension-cord guidance, while UL Solutions describes relocatable power taps.
If you need several receptacles at a desk or entertainment area, consider an indoor power strip rather than buying a longer cord just to gain outlets. If you need to reach a lamp or tool temporarily, select an extension cord for that environment and load. Neither a power strip nor a multi-outlet cord increases the power available from the wall outlet; the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) makes that point in its guidance on avoiding household overloads.
How to compare multi-outlet extension cords
Choose indoor or outdoor use first
Use only a cord marked for its intended setting. An indoor cord is not a substitute for an outdoor-rated one. For outdoor work, select a cord specifically marked for outdoor use and protect it from water and snow; an outdoor marking alone does not make every cord suitable for every wet condition. ESFI’s extension-cord safety tips and proper-use guidance advise choosing cords for the setting.

Match the rating to the connected load
Check the cord’s electrical rating and the wattage of the appliance or tool before use. The cord must be suitable for the load; do not assume that a thicker-looking cord or more outlets makes it capable of powering more equipment. ESFI advises matching the cord rating to the connected product. Its safety tips also advise against using an extension cord for more than one appliance, so a multi-outlet cord should not be treated as a way to run several appliances at once.
Do not use a multi-outlet cord to make a heater or fan connection seem acceptable. ESFI specifically cautions against using extension cords or power strips with heaters or fans in its overload guidance. If a room lacks convenient outlets, repeated reliance on cords is a sign to consider having properly installed outlets added.

Choose length, outlet layout, and compatibility for the task
Buy only as much reach as you need, and compare the number and spacing of receptacles with the plugs you expect to connect. Check that plugs fit without forcing them, and use a grounded cord when the connected equipment requires grounding. Never remove a grounding pin to make a plug fit. CPSC identifies characteristics such as minimum wire size, strain relief, polarization, continuity, and, for certain indoor cords, outlet covers; outdoor cords should have a flexible jacket. These are useful construction details to examine, not a claim that every cord must bear a particular certification under the CPSC guidance.
ESFI recommends buying cords approved by an independent testing laboratory. Check the product’s markings and instructions, rather than relying on outlet count or appearance alone.

Use the cord temporarily and inspect it
Extension cords are intended for temporary use, not as permanent household wiring. Do not run them through walls, doorways, ceilings, or floors, and do not connect cords or multi-outlet devices in a chain. ESFI advises against these practices because they can create hazards and conceal damage or overloading.
- Inspect the cord before use. Do not use it if the jacket, plug, or receptacle is damaged.
- Stop using a cord that becomes hot.
- Keep plugs compatible; never force one or defeat the grounding pin.
- Do not overload the cord or use it as a substitute for an installed outlet.
These precautions follow ESFI’s safety tips and cord-use guidance.

Two hazards to avoid when shopping
Male-to-male cords
Never use a cord with male plugs at both ends. In a March 31, 2026 warning, CPSC said exposed prongs can become energized and linked these products to dangerous generator backfeeding. Acting Chairman Peter A. Feldman said they “pose a serious risk of fire and electrocution and have no legitimate household use.” CPSC’s warning is available at its notice on male-to-male extension cords.
Unverified power strips and recalls
If a power strip is the right category for your indoor setup, check its exact product identifiers against current safety and recall notices. On March 26, 2026, CPSC recalled CCCEI power strips that lacked supplementary overcurrent protection and directed consumers to stop using the recalled products. That notice concerns the identified products; it is not evidence that all power strips have the same defect. See the CCCEI recall notice.

Quick Recap
Quick selection checklist
- Need more reach? Choose an extension cord marked for indoor or outdoor use as appropriate.
- Need several indoor outlets in one spot? Consider a power strip, keeping in mind it does not add circuit capacity.
- Have you checked the load? Compare device wattage with the cord rating and follow the equipment’s instructions.
- Will the cord be temporary and undamaged? Do not route it through building openings or chain it with other cords or strips.
- Does the plug fit safely? Do not force it or remove a grounding pin.
