Nor should you assume a charcoal bag removes particles such as pollen or dust: the sources cited here do not provide independent tests establishing that performance.
How to improve indoor air quality
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in its Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home, says: “The most effective ways to improve your indoor air are to reduce or remove the sources of pollutants and to ventilate with clean outdoor air.” Filtration can supplement those steps, but it does not replace them.

Choosing an air cleaner for gases or odors
For gas filtration, EPA advises: “To filter gases, choose a portable air cleaner with an activated carbon filter or other filter designed to remove gases.” A powered unit moves air through its filter; a passive bag does not provide that same room-air circulation.
Look beyond the words “activated carbon.” EPA’s technical summary explains that adsorption—the attraction of gas or vapor molecules to a surface—has finite capacity. Effectiveness varies by gas and operating conditions, and the media eventually needs maintenance or replacement. The amount and depth of gas-sorbent material matter; check the product’s target-gas claims, supporting data, and replacement instructions. There is no widely used performance rating system for portable gas-filter products comparable to the ratings used for particles. EPA notes that Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) measures particle removal, so a high CADR is not evidence that a unit removes gases effectively. For gas filtration, look for specific target-gas claims and supporting data rather than treating CADR as a gas-removal score.
