There is no single rubber strip that is best for every construction project. Choose by exposure, temperature, fluid contact, gap shape, required compression and attachment surface: EPDM is a strong starting point for outdoor weather sealing, NBR for oil and fuel, silicone for a wide temperature range, and neoprene/CR for mixed conditions. These are screening choices, not guarantees; the compound and actual service conditions matter.
Choose a strip by the job it must do
Start by defining the function: weather seal, cushioning, insulation, vibration damping or protection from impact. Then note the conditions the strip will face:
- Minimum and maximum operating temperatures.
- Sunlight, ozone, water, steam and weather exposure.
- Oils, fuels, solvents, grease or other chemicals.
- Abrasion, movement, load and the degree of compression.
- The gap dimensions, surface material and whether the strip needs adhesive backing.
Material names are useful for screening, but a supplier’s specific compound and product data should decide the final selection. Silton Rubber describes its comparison figures as indicative and notes that performance depends on formulation and exposure conditions: Silton Rubber’s materials guide.
Which rubber is best for outdoor use?
For an outdoor door, window or enclosure gap, begin with EPDM. Silton Rubber identifies it as having very good weather and ozone resistance, and Delta Rubber lists it for outdoor enclosure seals and weatherstripping. The key limitation is poor resistance to mineral oils and fuels in the cited material comparison, so EPDM is a poor starting choice where those fluids are part of the service environment.

Neoprene/CR can be a candidate for mixed conditions, including weather exposure, but it is not the strongest performer in every category. Check the particular grade against the chemicals and temperatures it will encounter. Supplier descriptions of applications are starting points, not proof that every strip made from a named polymer is suitable.
Which rubber is best for oil and fuel contact?
Investigate NBR (nitrile) for contact with oils, fuels, grease or hydraulic fluids. In Silton Rubber’s comparison, NBR has excellent oil and petrol resistance, but very poor weather and ozone resistance. Confirm the specific fluid, concentration, temperature and duration of contact with the strip supplier rather than relying on the polymer name alone.

- Easy to Install: Please wipe the adhesive surface clean before pasting, peel off the film on the adhesive and stick the trim on the door or window frame, then you can finish the job and start to enjoy the beautiful environment that the strip brings you.
For higher-temperature oil, fuel or chemical service, FKM may be worth comparing with NBR. It is a specialist material, and compatibility remains compound-specific; it may also be a more costly choice. Do not select it solely because the application is described as “high temperature.”
Which rubber is best for high temperature or extreme cold?
Compare silicone and FKM against the actual temperature range and the other demands of the job. Silton Rubber’s indicative chart lists silicone across a broader temperature span than the other materials shown, while FKM is also listed as a high-temperature option. Silicone has only fair abrasion resistance in that comparison, and the appropriate grade still needs checking for the medium, mechanical wear and installation method.

Should you use solid or sponge rubber strip?
Choose construction as well as compound. Metroseal describes solid rubber strip as suited to durability and load-bearing, while sponge strip compresses more readily and can fill irregular gaps to create a softer seal. For an uneven gap, a sponge or closed-cell strip may fit better if its compression and sealing characteristics suit the application. A solid strip may be the better candidate where it must carry load or resist wear.
Construction and compound answer different questions: a sponge strip still needs a suitable rubber compound for its environment. Check the supplier’s product details for the exact form and grade.

What size rubber strip do you need?
Measure the gap and determine how much the strip must compress to seal it without preventing the door, panel or joint from operating. Match both width and thickness to that fit. Suppliers offer different configurations, including cut-to-size material, but available sizes and options vary by supplier and product.
Silton Rubber lists these indicative Shore A hardness ranges: NBR 30–95, CR 35–95, EPDM 35–85, silicone 20–90, FKM 55–90 and SBR 40–90. These are supplier chart ranges reviewed in 2026, not a recommended hardness for every seal. Ask the supplier to help match hardness and compression to the gap, load and sealing duty.
Do you need adhesive-backed rubber strip?
Self-adhesive backing can simplify installation, but it does not make a strip suitable for every surface or exposure. Check adhesive compatibility with the substrate and service conditions. Delta Rubber advises cleaning and drying the surface and considering primer where required. If the substrate, temperature or exposure makes the adhesive unsuitable, choose an attachment method appropriate to the assembly instead.
For cut-to-order or unusual compound requirements, a specialist supplier may offer more configurations than a standard roll. Metroseal describes cut-to-order and adhesive-backed options; confirm current availability and the precise product specification directly with the supplier: Metroseal rubber strips. Delta Rubber’s overview covers product configurations and fitting considerations: Delta Rubber’s rubber strip guide.

Check approvals for food or medical contact
Some suppliers list FDA-approved silicone offerings, but approval applies to a specific grade or product, not automatically to all silicone strips. Before using a strip in food or medical applications, request documentation for the exact product and verify that it applies to the intended contact and conditions.
