The right ratchet crimper is the one matched to your terminal and wire—not a universal “best” tool. For insulated terminals on 10–22 AWG stranded copper wire, the Klein Tools 3005CR has three documented size-matched cavities. For non-insulated terminals, ferrules, heat-shrink terminals, or specialty contacts, choose a tool whose manufacturer specifically lists that application.
How to choose a ratchet crimper
- Identify the terminal. Check whether it is insulated, non-insulated, heat-shrink, a ferrule, or a specific contact. Jaw profiles are not interchangeable by assumption: Klein specifies its 3005CR for insulated terminals, while Pro’sKit specifies its CP-151B for non-insulated spade and ring terminals.
- Match the wire range and cavity. Use the tool maker’s wire range and, where provided, its cavity mapping. Do not treat a broad gauge range as proof that every cavity accepts every terminal type.
- Check the operating controls. A full-cycle ratchet, force adjustment, and release mechanism can help with tool operation. They do not replace choosing the correct die and terminal or preparing the wire correctly.
- Consider whether you need multiple applications. A purpose-specific tool may be simpler for one terminal family. For mixed work, look for a set with dies explicitly designed for each terminal type, or a system with compatible interchangeable dies.
Ratchet crimpers compared by documented application
| Tool | Manufacturer-documented application and wire range | Documented features |
|---|---|---|
| Klein Tools 3005CR | Insulated terminals on stranded copper wire, 10–22 AWG. Three cavities: 22–16 AWG (red), 16–14 AWG (blue), and 12–10 AWG (yellow). | Full-cycle ratcheting, compound action, force adjustment dial. |
| Milwaukee Tool 48-22-3084 | Insulated terminals on stranded copper wire, 22–10 AWG, in red, blue, and yellow size groups. | Compound ratcheting action, force adjustment, quick-release lever. |
| Klein Tools 3000CRKIT | Insulated, non-insulated, heat-shrink, and ferrule terminals on stranded copper wire, 10–22 AWG. The maker says each die has cavities designed for its terminal type. | Ratchet set with terminal-specific die cavities. |
| TE Connectivity PRO-CRIMPER III | Interchangeable SDE die system for a range of prototyping, networking, commercial, industrial, and maintenance uses. A single wire range is not stated on the cited product information. | User-adjustable ratchet control, emergency ratchet release, and more than 100 interchangeable SDE die sets. Verify the specific die for the connector. |
| Pro’sKit CP-151B | Non-insulated spade and ring terminals in AWG 22–16, 16–14, 12, and 10. | Not stated on the cited product information. |
These are manufacturer specifications, not comparative test results. They do not establish that one tool produces a better crimp in every application.
Which tool fits which job?
Insulated terminals on stranded copper
The Klein Tools 3005CR is a specifically documented option when the terminals are insulated and the wire falls within its 10–22 AWG range. Follow its cavity mapping rather than selecting by handle color alone. Milwaukee’s 48-22-3084 is another manufacturer-specified insulated-terminal crimper covering 22–10 AWG stranded copper wire; its listed size groups are red, blue, and yellow.
Mixed terminal types
If your work includes insulated, non-insulated, heat-shrink, and ferrule terminals, Klein’s 3000CRKIT is documented for all four categories on 10–22 AWG stranded copper wire. Its terminal-specific cavities matter: a set covering multiple types does not mean one die cavity suits them all.

Non-insulated spade and ring terminals
Pro’sKit lists the CP-151B for non-insulated spade and ring terminals, with separate stated wire bands of 22–16, 16–14, 12, and 10 AWG. That specificity illustrates why a crimper advertised for insulated terminals should not be presumed suitable for non-insulated connectors.
Work requiring interchangeable dies
TE Connectivity’s PRO-CRIMPER III uses the SDE die system and provides user-adjustable ratchet control and emergency release. TE describes more than 100 interchangeable SDE die sets for varied work, but the platform is not a universal die fit: select the particular die specified for the connector and application.

- Crimps insulated terminals onto 10-22 AWG stranded copper wire
- Adjustable compound action design puts more crimping power into each squeeze
- Three crimping cavities in one tool: 22–16 AWG (Red), 16–14 AWG (Blue) and 12–10 AWG (Yellow) terminals
- Built-in ratchet ensures full-cycle crimping for a uniform crimp every time
- Unique cavity design provides consistent crimp from either side of the tool
What a ratchet mechanism does—and does not—do
TE Connectivity says its CERTI-CRIMP II ratchet “confirms full crimping of the contact and, once engaged, will not release until the dies have been fully closed.” That describes the mechanism: the handles remain locked through the cycle until the dies close. It is not a guarantee of a correct connection if the wire, terminal, cavity, or preparation is wrong, and it should not be generalized to every ratchet crimper.
Force adjustment and quick or emergency release are also operating features, not substitutes for application compatibility. Read the manufacturer’s instructions for setup and release, especially when using adjustable or interchangeable-die tools.

Safety note about insulated handles
Do not treat plastic-dipped or slip-on plastic handle coverings as protection from electric shock. Klein’s warning states that these coverings are not intended as shock protection. Use tools and electrical-safety procedures appropriate to the work, and do not assume a covered handle is insulated for energized work.
