A refrigerator thermometer helps you check whether your appliance is actually staying at a food-safe temperature. U.S. FoodSafety.gov guidance says to keep a refrigerator at 40°F (4°C) or below and a freezer at 0°F (-18°C) or below. The available evidence supports using an appliance thermometer, but it does not establish a tested “best” model or verify the accuracy or performance of any particular product.

What temperature should your refrigerator be?

Set your refrigerator to 40°F (4°C) or below and your freezer to 0°F (-18°C) or below. FoodSafety.gov recommends checking with an appliance thermometer rather than relying only on the appliance’s control setting, which does not by itself confirm the temperature inside. See FoodSafety.gov’s food-safety steps and its guidance on maintaining food safety while cutting food waste.

Do you need a refrigerator thermometer?

If you want to verify that your refrigerator and freezer meet those targets, an appliance thermometer is the practical tool for the job. FoodSafety.gov also recommends having thermometers in both appliances as part of power-outage preparation, so you can check their temperatures when power returns. Its disaster and emergency guidance explains this use.

How to choose a refrigerator thermometer

There is no substantiated product winner in the available evidence: it includes no head-to-head testing or verified model specifications. Choose a refrigerator/freezer appliance thermometer based on practical needs, not unverified claims about a particular model.

How to use the reading for food-safety decisions

FoodSafety.gov says bacteria that cause food poisoning multiply quickest between 40°F (4°C) and 140°F (60°C). Refrigerate perishables within two hours, or within one hour when they have been exposed to temperatures above 90°F (32°C). A thermometer helps monitor appliance temperature; it does not replace safe handling or the agency’s food-specific advice.

What to do during a power outage

FoodSafety.gov says a closed refrigerator can keep food safe for up to four hours during an outage. Freezer guidance depends on whether the freezer is full or half full, so use the agency’s power-outage food-safety chart for decisions about particular foods. Check appliance thermometer readings when power returns, but do not treat a reading as the only test for whether food is safe to keep.
