The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends choosing MERV 13 when upgrading—or the highest rating your system can accommodate. Check your equipment manual or ask an HVAC professional before moving to a higher rating.
What MERV tells you—and what it does not
MERV, or Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, compares how well HVAC filters capture particles between 0.3 and 10 microns. The rating is based on a test method developed by ASHRAE. A higher MERV rating indicates greater capture of certain particle sizes under that method, but it is not a promise of a particular health outcome or of performance in every home.
For MERV 13, the EPA table lists minimum capture thresholds of 50% for particles 0.30–1.0 µm, 85% for 1.0–3.0 µm, and 90% for 3.0–10.0 µm. These are rating thresholds, not results from testing a particular brand or filter in your system. EPA’s MERV rating explanation and table provide the details.
MERV is one useful comparison point, not a complete measure of real-world performance. The filter’s dimensions, construction, airflow resistance, compatibility with the equipment, and replacement schedule matter too.

Choose a rating your HVAC system can handle
EPA advises: “If you decide to upgrade to a higher efficiency filter, choose a filter with at least a MERV 13 rating, or as high a rating as your system fan and filter slot can accommodate.” EPA also says most furnaces and HVAC systems can accommodate MERV 13 without equipment problems when the filter is replaced frequently. That general guidance does not confirm compatibility with a specific furnace or air handler.
A filter that is too restrictive for a system can interfere with airflow. Before buying a higher-MERV filter, check the HVAC manufacturer’s instructions for permitted ratings and filter requirements. If those instructions are unclear, consult an HVAC professional rather than assuming that a higher rating is automatically better for your equipment. See EPA’s guidance on air cleaners and air filters for the home.

- DIFFERENT FROM NOMINAL SIZE: Slightly different from the nominal size, this air filter’s exact dimensions are 19.69 x 24.69 x 0.81
- EXCLUSIVE TECHNOLOGY: Designed with exclusive Filtrete 3-in-1 technology to pull in and trap unwanted particles, allowing cleaner air to flow through
- COUNTLESS PARTICLES: With a 300 MPR and MERV 5 rating, your Filtrete Filter will help capture many particles from the air passing through it
Start with the correct filter size
Find the required dimensions in your system manual, on the existing filter, or on the filter slot. Match the size specified for the unit; a filter that does not fit correctly may leave gaps or fail to seat as intended. Product listings may show nominal dimensions alongside actual dimensions, so compare the listing with the measurements and size designation your equipment requires.
Do not select a filter by MERV rating alone. A correctly sized, compatible filter is essential; an incompatible filter is not a sound upgrade, even if its rating is higher.

Compare compatible pleated filters
Once you know the required size and the rating your system permits, compare candidate filters using these factors:
- MERV rating: Choose MERV 13 if the system can accommodate it, or the highest suitable rating allowed by the HVAC manufacturer.
- Depth and construction: Pleat depth and media area can affect filtration and airflow resistance. Compare these details when product specifications provide them.
- Airflow resistance: Use available specifications and manufacturer guidance to assess whether the filter is suitable for your equipment. Do not infer compatibility from MERV alone.
- Replacement instructions: Follow the filter maker’s instructions and the HVAC manufacturer’s maintenance guidance.
EPA does not certify or recommend particular filter brands or models in its home air-cleaner guide. The available evidence supports comparing compatible filters by size, rating, construction, resistance, and maintenance instructions; it does not establish a universal best brand, current price winner, or service life.

Understand runtime and replacement
A central HVAC filter cleans air only while the system is running. How much air passes through the filter therefore depends partly on system runtime and airflow. Running equipment longer may increase electricity use and can affect humidity control, so runtime is not a substitute for choosing a compatible filter.
There is no single replacement interval that applies to every filter and system. Follow the HVAC and filter manufacturers’ instructions, and account for the conditions specified in that guidance. EPA’s recommendation to replace a MERV 13 filter frequently is not a universal calendar schedule. Its consumer guidance on home air cleaners and filters explains the role of system operation and maintenance.

Do not confuse MERV with HEPA
HEPA is a separate filter classification, commonly used in portable air cleaners. An ordinary high-MERV furnace filter is not automatically a HEPA filter. Call a product HEPA only when its documentation establishes that classification. For a central HVAC system, select a filter according to the equipment’s size and compatibility requirements rather than treating the labels as interchangeable.
Quick Recap
A practical buying checklist
- Identify the required size. Check the system manual or existing filter and confirm the dimensions required by the unit.
- Check the allowed rating. Look up the HVAC manufacturer’s permitted filter rating. If uncertain, ask an HVAC professional.
- Choose the highest suitable MERV rating. Use MERV 13 if the system can accommodate it; otherwise choose the highest rating it can handle.
- Compare construction and resistance. Review filter depth, pleating, media area, and any airflow-resistance specifications available.
- Follow maintenance directions. Use the filter and equipment manufacturers’ replacement instructions instead of relying on a universal interval.
