The best outdoor ice maker is the one explicitly approved for outdoor use and compatible with your kitchen’s temperature exposure, cabinet opening, ventilation, water supply, drainage, and electrical service. Do not choose by stainless-steel finish or headline pounds-per-day alone: manufacturers specify different ice types, storage capacities, operating conditions, and drain arrangements.
Which outdoor ice maker is best for my outdoor kitchen?
Start with installation approval, then narrow the choices by ice style, stored capacity, dimensions, and utility connections. The models below illustrate distinct trade-offs; their figures are manufacturer specifications, not results from an independent comparative test. Confirm current documentation and availability for the exact model before ordering.
| Model | Outdoor use and installation | Ice and stated output | Storage | Drain and other fit notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GE UCC15NJII / UNC15NJII | GE describes limited outdoor applications and built-in or freestanding installation. Ambient operating range: 50–100°F; keep dry and shaded and protect from freezing. | Nugget or gourmet ice, depending on model; daily production not stated on the cited support page. | Not stated on the cited support page. | Optional UPK3 drain pump kit. GE says not to drain into a swimming pool or onto landscaping. |
| KitchenAid KUIO338HSS | KitchenAid describes outdoor-rated construction and built-in or freestanding installation; 18-inch model. | Clear cubes; daily production not stated on the cited product page. | 35 pounds, according to KitchenAid. | Filter F2WC9I1 is named by KitchenAid, which recommends changing it every six months for best results. Drain details and dimensions beyond width are not stated here. |
| Newair 18-inch Undercounter Clear Ice Maker | Newair describes outdoor-rated construction and built-in or freestanding installation. | Clear ice; up to 100 pounds per day at 61°F ambient temperature and 68°F water temperature, per Newair. | Not stated on the cited product page excerpt. | Integrated drain pump with gravity-drain backup. Check the exact installation manual for required connections and clearances. |
| Summit BIM24OSBase34 | Summit describes it as UL-approved for outdoor use and suitable for built-in or freestanding installation. | Up to 12 pounds per day, according to Summit. | 12 pounds, according to Summit. | Summit says operation does not require a drain. |
| Accucold BIM68OSPUMP | Accucold describes an indoor/outdoor, front-breathing model. | Up to 47 pounds per day, according to Accucold. | 26 pounds, according to Accucold. | Built-in pump; Accucold says professional installation is required. |
Choose by the job the ice has to do
- For clear cubes and a larger reserve: KitchenAid lists 35 pounds of storage, while Newair advertises a higher daily production ceiling under specified temperature conditions. These figures describe different things: production replenishes ice over time; storage is the bin’s stated capacity.
- For nugget or gourmet ice: GE’s UCC15NJII and UNC15NJII are the relevant examples. Check the exact model designation to confirm which ice type you are buying.
- For a no-drain installation: Summit’s BIM24OSBase34 is specifically described as requiring no drain. That may simplify planning, but its stated production and storage are each 12 pounds.
- For a pumped drain arrangement: Newair lists an integrated pump with gravity-drain backup; Accucold lists a built-in pump and requires professional installation. GE identifies an optional pump kit for its two models.
Confirm outdoor approval and operating conditions first
A stainless-steel exterior is not proof that an appliance is suitable for an exposed patio or outdoor kitchen. Look for an explicit outdoor-use statement for the exact model and follow the installation manual’s limits. KitchenAid describes the KUIO338HSS as UL approved for outdoor use, and Summit identifies the BIM24OSBase34 as UL-approved for outdoor use. Newair describes its model as outdoor-rated; Accucold describes its BIM68OSPUMP as indoor/outdoor.
GE’s guidance for the UCC15NJII and UNC15NJII is narrower: it permits only limited outdoor applications and specifies an ambient range of 50–100°F. GE warns, “Severe damage will occur to the unit if operated in ambient temperatures less than 50°F or higher than 100°F.” The guidance also says to keep the units dry and shaded and protect them from freezing. That makes site exposure and local seasonal temperatures part of model selection, not an afterthought.

- INSTALLATION & MAINTENANCE TIPS – This unit utilizes Gravity Drainage (requires a floor drain or gravity outlet; strictly no pump included). Please ensure the drain hose is positioned lower than the machine specifically for optimal drainage. IMPORTANT: Before first use, keep the machine upright for at least 24 hours to let the refrigerant settle. We recommend running the self-cleaning cycle twice before consuming the first batch of ice.
Match production and storage to actual use
Daily production is not the amount available in the bin at once. A maker can produce ice over a day while holding a smaller reserve; frequent use, warm conditions, and restocking needs all affect whether that reserve is enough. Compare both figures when manufacturers provide them, and treat “up to” output as a stated maximum rather than a guarantee under every installation.
Conditions matter: Newair’s up-to-100-pound daily figure is specified at 61°F ambient and 68°F water. The listed figures for Summit and Accucold are manufacturer-stated specifications, but the cited material does not attach those same temperature conditions to their output. Do not treat these numbers as directly comparable test results.

Plan the opening, ventilation, and service access
Before cabinets or countertops are finalized, obtain the exact model’s current cutout dimensions and installation instructions. The examples include 15-inch GE models and 18-inch KitchenAid and Newair models, but nominal width alone does not establish the required opening. Check height, depth, door swing, leveling requirements, clearances, and whether the appliance is designed to be built in.
Front-breathing construction can matter when an appliance is installed under a counter because airflow must not be blocked by surrounding cabinetry. Accucold explicitly describes the BIM68OSPUMP as front-breathing. For other models, verify the vent location and required clearances in the manufacturer’s installation documentation rather than assuming they share the same arrangement. Leave practical access for cleaning, filter changes, and service.

What does installation require?
Requirements vary by model. Most planning decisions should be settled before construction: the water connection, power supply, drain route or pump arrangement, cabinet opening, and access for maintenance. Have the installer follow the appliance documentation and applicable local codes.
- Confirm the model and site conditions. Check the outdoor-use statement, ambient-temperature limits, exposure to rain and freezing, and built-in or freestanding suitability.
- Verify the cabinet opening and airflow. Use the exact installation manual for dimensions, clearances, and vent requirements; do not rely on the product’s nominal width alone.
- Choose the drain route. Determine whether the unit uses gravity drainage, a pump, an optional pump kit, or no drain. Confirm where discharge can legally and safely go. GE specifically cautions against draining its covered units into a swimming pool or onto landscaping.
- Provide the required utilities. Confirm water and electrical connection specifications from the model’s current installation instructions, and position connections so they do not obstruct the appliance or service access.
- Arrange qualified installation where specified. Accucold states professional installation is required for the BIM68OSPUMP. Follow any similar requirement in the chosen model’s documentation.
How do you clean and maintain a commercial outdoor ice maker?
Use the care instructions for the specific appliance; “commercial” is not enough to determine a cleaning schedule or procedure. The cited product information does not establish a universal cleaning interval or sanitizer recipe for these models, so do not substitute a generic routine for the manufacturer’s directions. Keep the unit protected from weather as specified, maintain its water filtration where applicable, and ensure vents and service areas remain accessible.
