Ozone generators are not suitable for cleaning air in an occupied home. They deliberately produce ozone, a lung irritant, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says no federal agency has approved them for use in occupied spaces. At concentrations that do not exceed public-health standards, ozone has little potential to remove indoor contaminants. For routine particle reduction, consider a properly sized portable air cleaner or a compatible HVAC filter instead.
What an ozone generator does
An ozone generator produces ozone gas (O3) and releases it into the surrounding air. That is different from filtering air: a filter captures particles as air passes through it, while an ozone generator intentionally adds a reactive gas to the space. The EPA describes ozone as a lung irritant and advises against using ozone generators as air cleaners in occupied spaces. EPA: Ozone Generators that are Sold as Air Cleaners
Are ozone generators safe to use in a house?
Not while people or pets are in the space. Ozone exposure can cause breathing problems and worsen respiratory conditions. Risk depends on the concentration and duration of exposure, as well as activity that increases breathing rate. A device’s room-size chart, built-in sensor, or lack of noticeable odor does not establish that the air is safe.
Concentration is affected by more than floor area or a manufacturer’s coverage claim. Relevant factors include the generator’s output, room size, open or closed doors, furnishings and other materials, outdoor air, ventilation, and distance from the device. Concentrations may be highest near the outlet, and smell is not a reliable way to judge exposure.

Ozone also reacts with common indoor emissions. Those reactions can produce irritating or corrosive by-products, including ultrafine particles, formaldehyde, ketones, and organic acids. Do ozone generators clean the air?
They are not an effective general-purpose air-cleaning choice at concentrations that do not exceed public-health standards. Ozone does not remove airborne particles such as dust and pollen, and the EPA says it does not remove carbon monoxide or formaldehyde.

Ozone may inactivate some biological contaminants at sufficiently high concentrations, but the concentrations needed to decontaminate air may exceed public-health limits. Contaminants embedded in porous materials may remain unaffected even at high concentrations. An odor becoming less noticeable is not proof that pollutants have been removed or that a space is safe.
When is ozone treatment used?
The EPA describes high-concentration ozone treatment as a possible approach in certain unoccupied-space situations, including some fire-restoration work. That is a controlled, specialized treatment context—not a recommendation to run a consumer generator in a home. People and pets must be protected from exposure, and the EPA notes that little is known about chemical by-products from these processes.

CADR is a measure used to describe how effectively a room air cleaner reduces particles. EPA does not certify or recommend specific home air-cleaner brands, so a brand name or an “EPA-approved” marketing claim is not a substitute for checking the device’s actual function and fit. How to evaluate an air-cleaning product
- Identify the pollutant. Decide whether your concern is particles, gases, or odors. A particle filter is not a universal treatment for gases, and ozone does not remove particles.
- Check how the device works. Avoid treating deliberate ozone production as ordinary filtration. Do not rely on a room-size label or sensor as proof of safe occupied-space use.
- Match the device to the room and system. For a portable cleaner, consider the room and particle-cleaning performance such as CADR. For an HVAC filter, verify compatibility with your equipment.
- Review upkeep and limitations. Check the filter or system’s maintenance requirements and the pollutants it is intended to address.
- Be skeptical of broad claims. EPA does not certify air-cleaning devices. A claim that a product is EPA-approved does not establish federal approval for use in occupied spaces.
