The best over-the-range (OTR) microwave is the one that fits your opening, works with your kitchen’s vent route and offers the microwave capacity and ventilation you need. Before comparing features, confirm the model’s installation clearances and whether it can exhaust outdoors or only recirculate air. An OTR unit combines a microwave, cooktop light and fan while freeing counter space, but it may not ventilate as effectively as a dedicated range hood.

What is an over-the-range microwave?

An OTR microwave mounts above the cooking range and combines microwave cooking with a fan and light aimed at the cooktop. The fan can either send air outdoors through ductwork or filter it and return it to the kitchen, depending on the appliance and its installation. Those are different ventilation methods: recirculation does not equal outdoor exhaust.

Will an over-the-range microwave fit?

Measure the actual cabinet opening and surrounding space before selecting a model. Check width, height and depth, the distance above the cooktop, nearby walls and cabinets, and whether the door can open without obstruction. Because dimensions and mounting requirements vary by model, use the manufacturer’s specification sheet and installation manual rather than relying on category averages.

For scale, Frigidaire lists the Gallery GMOS1266AF low-profile model at 10 5/16 inches high by 29 7/8 inches wide by 18 5/8 inches deep. Bosch lists the HMV3055U at 16 7/16 inches high by 30 inches wide by 15 1/4 inches deep. These examples have different heights and depths; verify their individual installation instructions before deciding whether either fits your kitchen. #1 Best Overall
GE 30" Over-the-Range Microwave 1.6 Cu. Ft., 1000W Stainless Steel
  • Space-Saving Over-the-Range Design: Maximize kitchen space with this 30-inch microwave that mounts above your stove. This microwave hood vent combo combines cooking and ventilation in one appliance. Measures: 16.12" H x 29.87" W x 15.56" D
  • Trusted GE Performance: From quick breakfasts to late-night snacks, this GE over-the-range microwave delivers the reliable performance, user-friendly controls, and everyday convenience that have made GE a trusted name in kitchens for generations
  • Powerful 2-Speed Ventilation: Keep small spaces clear of cooking odors, steam and smoke with a 300-CFM ventilation system and 2-speed fan
  • Charcoal Filter: Enjoy cooking and cleaner air, too. The replaceable charcoal filter removes fumes and odors that are released from foods during cooking
  • Simple One-Touch Controls: One-touch express cooking settings and 4 convenience cook settings provide easy operation for busy lifestyles, while the digital display and electronic keypad provide precise control of cook time and power settings

Also consider how high the controls and cooking cavity will sit for the people who use them. Mounting a microwave above a hot cooktop can make it less accessible, and the unit must preserve the clearances required by its manual.

Does it vent outside or recirculate?

Find out how the existing kitchen is configured: does ductwork run from the microwave location to the outdoors, and is it compatible with the appliance’s permitted routing? Some OTR microwaves can be configured for exterior exhaust or recirculation; capabilities and horizontal or vertical duct options depend on the exact model. Confirm the allowed setup in the product documentation before purchasing.

With outdoor exhaust, cooking air is carried through ductwork outside. In a recirculating setup, filters treat some of the air before it returns to the room. A charcoal filter may be required for recirculation, but it should not be treated as equivalent to outdoor exhaust or as proof that all cooking pollutants are removed. Check the filter type, access and replacement guidance in the manual.

Requirements also depend on the project. ENERGY STAR’s August 20, 2024 bulletin for its residential new-construction programs specifies at least 100 CFM intermittent airflow or 5 air changes per hour continuous, with exhaust directly outdoors. In that program context it says, “Do not use recirculating systems; these do not comply with the program’s local exhaust requirements.” These are criteria for the programs described in the bulletin, not a universal minimum or building-code statement for every kitchen. How many CFM do you need?

CFM describes airflow, but a labeled rating alone cannot establish how effectively an installed unit captures cooking emissions. Duct size, length, turns and installation all matter. Whirlpool’s comparison chart says most of its OTR models fall in a 280–400 CFM motor class and have two to six fan speeds; it also cautions that performance varies with installation. Those are manufacturer category figures, not an independent ranking or a guarantee of installed performance. Whirlpool combination microwave and vent hood comparison chart.

Compare the selected model’s documented airflow and fan controls with your vent route and cooking needs. If stronger ventilation is the priority, a dedicated range hood may be a better fit than a microwave hood. For a construction or renovation project with exhaust requirements, confirm the applicable program, local rules and design with the responsible professional; do not use a recirculating configuration where direct outdoor exhaust is required.

Whirlpool OTR range: compare specifications, not a winner claim

Whirlpool’s chart gives a broad view of its OTR range: most listed models are in the 280–400 CFM motor class, with two to six fan speeds. Because the company notes that installation affects performance, use the chart to narrow candidates—not to assume one model will deliver a particular capture result in your kitchen.
