The right hair-washing sink is the one that fits your room, plumbing, clients and daily workflow—not a universal “best” model. Choose among a complete chair-and-basin station, a separate pedestal sink and chair, a storage cabinet with a basin, or a portable wash basin. Then compare bowl position and neck support, stylist access, clearances and installation requirements before ordering.
Which shampoo setup is right for your salon?
Salon stations generally fall into four configurations. Minerva Beauty uses “shampoo system” for an integrated station and notes that backwash and sidewash are also used for these setups. Its recommendations are starting points, not rules: the best fit depends on the work you do, available space, plumbing and how clients and stylists move through the room. See Minerva Beauty’s shampoo system buying guide.
| Configuration | What it includes | When it may fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Integrated shampoo system | A basin and chair combined as one station. | A full-service salon that can accommodate a fixed station; Minerva suggests this configuration for that setting. | Overall footprint, bowl position, client support, stylist access, plumbing and professional installation requirements. |
| Pedestal sink and separate chair | A fixed pedestal basin paired with a separate chair. | A salon suite or room where separate pieces suit the layout; Minerva suggests this as a salon-suite option. | Whether chair and basin align comfortably, plus the footprint and installation requirements of both pieces. |
| Shampoo bowl cabinet | A basin mounted with cabinet storage. | A setup where keeping supplies at the station is useful; Minerva identifies storage as a reason to consider this type. | Cabinet dimensions, access for cleaning and maintenance, bowl position, and any plumbing or installation needs. |
| Portable wash basin | A movable basin rather than a permanent chair-and-basin installation. | A compact or mobile setup where a fixed station is impractical. | Stability, hose and water arrangement, storage and transport. A Salon Services catalog for 2020–2021 describes an example, but does not establish that it remains in stock. |
What makes a wash station comfortable to use?
Assess the client’s position and the stylist’s working space together. A bowl that tilts or adjusts can help bring the basin toward a client; adequate foot space and a suitable working height can make it easier for the stylist to work. Product features are not proof of comfort for every client, so check the exact model and, where possible, assess its fit with the clients you serve.
Bowl position and neck support
Minerva says a tilting bowl can help bring the basin closer to shorter clients or children. Look for the bowl’s adjustment range, depth and position, and check whether the neck rest supports the client in the position they will use. Minerva’s Montego pedestal-sink feature list includes a ceramic tilting bowl and silicone gel neck rest, along with a faucet, soft-spray hose, drain strainer and a UPC valve with built-in backflow preventer. These are vendor-listed features; confirm the current specification with the seller before buying.

Stylist access and working height
Check whether the basin leaves room for the stylist’s legs and feet, and whether its height works with the chair and the tasks performed at the station. A floating shroud is one design feature Minerva describes as providing more foot space for the stylist.
ABS Salon Equipment says its patented Adjust-a-Sink allows the stylist to adjust the shampoo bowl height by 12 inches, from 34 to 46 inches from the floor, and describes the range as providing a comfortable fit and working height. Those are manufacturer claims, not independently validated comfort findings. See the ABS Salon Equipment brochure for the stated range and chair compatibility.

How much room should you allow?
Measure the exact station model and the space around it before placing an order. Minerva advises checking each product’s dimensions and footprint. As its own layout rule of thumb—not a building code—it suggests 32–42 inches between shampoo chairs, at least 24 inches behind the bowl for stylist access, and 24 inches at the opposite end for client leg and foot space. Verify local requirements separately.
- Measure the room and mark the proposed station footprint, including the chair in its working position.
- Check the manufacturer’s dimensions for the exact model; do not assume similarly named stations have the same footprint.
- Allow for the clearances Minerva recommends, then confirm that doors, walkways, nearby stations and storage remain usable.
- Consider the clients who will use the station, including whether the chair, bowl position and surrounding space work for their needs.
What should you confirm before buying?
A fixed wash station is an installation decision as well as a furniture purchase. The available sources do not establish one plumbing specification that applies to every basin or locality. Ask the seller and installer to confirm requirements for the specific model and site, and check local requirements before committing.

When does a portable shampoo basin make sense?
A portable basin is worth considering when mobility or a compact setup matters more than having a permanent integrated station. The Salon Services equipment catalog for 2020–2021 describes a compact example with an adjustable basin, a 2 m hose with suction cup, an extending silicone foot and neck rest, and a carry case. Its listed dimensions are 75–120 cm high, 25.5 cm wide and 60.5 cm deep; listed weight is 5 kg. Those are catalog specifications for that example, not confirmation of current availability, price or suitability for every setup. See the Salon Services equipment catalog.
Quick Recap

- BRASS BODY FOR A BUSY WASH STATION: Replace a worn salon shampoo bowl faucet with a brass-body fitting and a polished 5-layer chrome finish that is easy to wipe after everyday use. Compared with the zinc alloy bodies found on others, brass gives salon owners a clear material difference to consider. Refresh the appearance of a frequently used hair salon or barber shop station while choosing the faucet by its construction, not its shine alone
- ONE HANDLE FOR HOT AND COLD WATER: Adjust hot and cold water from one easy-to-reach lever while your other hand guides the shampoo bowl sprayer or supports the client’s head. This practical control helps the stylist move through wetting, shampooing and rinsing at a shampoo bed or backwash sink without repeatedly reaching for separate hot and cold handles
- TARGETED RINSING WITH A HANDHELD SPRAYER: Guide the handheld shampoo bowl sprayer along the hairline, nape and back of the head while the client remains reclined at the bowl. Its flexible black shampoo bowl hose lets the stylist change the rinse position without asking the client to repeatedly move their head. The movable sprayer makes it easier to rinse these areas at a salon wash station while the client stays in a comfortable position
- COMPLETE FAUCET & SPRAYER KIT: The set includes a brass salon sink faucet, handheld sprayer, flexible black sprayer hose, two 31.5-inch metal-braided inlet hoses with 3/8-inch female connections and two adapters for compatible 1/2-inch water supply connections. The inlet hoses have 304 stainless steel outer braiding and brass fittings. For shampoo bowl hose replacement or other shampoo bowl parts needs, check the pictured contents carefully: this set includes both the faucet and sprayer assembly
- CHECK YOUR CONNECTIONS BEFORE ORDERING: The inlet hoses connect directly to compatible 3/8-inch water supply fittings; the included adapters allow connection to compatible 1/2-inch fittings. Compare your existing hose threads, water lines and faucet mounting hole against the product measurements before replacing a salon faucet for shampoo bowl use. A shampoo bed or backwash unit can look similar to another model but use different fittings; checking the dimensions first helps you select a compatible replacement
