No washer is guaranteed to last a set number of years, and the evidence here does not identify one brand as the universal winner. For a better chance of a trouble-free purchase, compare current reliability information among washers of the same type, then check repair access, warranty terms, fit, operating costs, and the care the machine requires.
What reliability and lifespan figures actually tell you
Consumer Reports’ July 30, 2026 reliability article draws on 95,510 members’ experiences with 108,608 new washers purchased between 2015 and 2025. It estimates the likelihood that new models from a brand will have problems or break within five years. That is a comparative prediction of early trouble—not a promise about how long an individual washer will last. Consumer Reports’ reliability methodology and category discussion
The results are organized by washer type: front-load, top-load agitator, high-efficiency top-load, and compact. Compare like with like rather than treating all washers as one category. The article’s available methodology does not establish a universal winning brand or provide a current model-by-model recommendation, so check the latest ratings for the exact type and model you are considering.
In Consumer Reports’ separate lifespan article, updated June 27, 2022, most major manufacturers said washers should last at least a decade. In a survey of more than 100,000 washers purchased between 2011 and 2021, around 20 percent broke or stopped working as intended during that period. This is older survey context, not a new 2026 failure estimate or a forecast for a particular machine. Consumer Reports’ lifespan context and maintenance advice

How to compare washers for long-term ownership
Reliability within the right category
Start with current brand and model evidence for the washer type you need. A compact machine and a full-size top-loader are not interchangeable comparisons. Treat survey results as one input: they describe reported experiences and predict problems over a defined period, not the total service life of a specific unit.
Repair access, warranty, and parts
Before buying, check whether authorized service is available where you live, how easily parts can be obtained, and what the warranty covers and excludes. A favorable reliability estimate is less useful if a common repair is difficult or expensive to arrange. Consumer NZ identifies design, component quality, use, maintenance, warranty length, reliability, and owner satisfaction as relevant considerations in washer repairability and lifespan. Capacity, dimensions, and installation constraints
Choose a capacity that suits your household’s laundry volume, then measure the installation space—including access for delivery, door clearance, and room for hoses. If you need a compact or stackable setup, verify that the exact washer and any companion equipment are compatible. A machine that is awkward to fit or too small for regular loads may be a poor long-term choice even if its reliability evidence looks favorable.
Energy and water use
ENERGY STAR says certified clothes washers use about 20% less energy and 30% less water than regular washers. Use the EnergyGuide label to compare energy use and estimated annual operating cost among similar machines; actual costs depend on local utility rates and household use. ENERGY STAR also estimates that the average American family washes about 300 loads per year and that certified washers can save about $530 in energy costs over the product lifetime. Those are program-level estimates, not guaranteed savings for a particular household. ENERGY STAR clothes-washer guidance and product finder

Cycles, controls, noise, and daily use
Consider whether the washer has the cycles your household needs, whether its controls are straightforward for everyone who will use it, and whether noise or vibration matters in your home. Features only add value if they suit your routine and you can use them comfortably.
Quick Recap
How to reduce avoidable wear and moisture problems
- Level the washer. Make sure it sits level, with its feet firmly on the floor; vibration can contribute to damage. Consumer Reports laundry-appliance test lab lead Richard Handel advises, “If your washer is unsteady, extend one foot at a time.”
- Let damp areas dry. For a front-loader, wipe moisture from the inside of the door and rubber gasket, remove residue from the gasket, and leave the door ajar between loads when it is safe to do so. For a top-loader, leave the lid open when safe. Open the dispenser so it can dry as well.
- Inspect fill hoses. Look for cracks or brittleness and consult the washer manual for inspection and replacement guidance.
- Follow the manual for cleaning. Use the washer’s cleaning cycle if it has one. Consumer Reports mentions an empty hot cycle with a cup of bleach as an option for machines without a cleaning cycle, but cleaning instructions vary; follow the model’s manual before using bleach or any other cleaner.
A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Compare current reliability evidence for the same washer type and check the survey period and measurement.
- Confirm the model’s dimensions, usable capacity, installation needs, and compatibility with any stacking arrangement.
- Verify local repair service, parts access, warranty coverage, exclusions, and likely repair costs.
- Compare EnergyGuide estimates among similar machines and check ENERGY STAR certification if efficiency is a priority.
- Choose controls and cycles that match your laundry needs, space, and tolerance for noise or vibration.
- Recheck current model specifications, stock, and warranty terms with the seller or manufacturer before purchasing.
