The best glass cooktop depends on its heating method, not just its smooth surface. Radiant electric cooktops heat the glass beneath the pan; induction cooktops use an electromagnetic field to heat compatible cookware. Before choosing one, confirm the technology, check your pans, and verify the appliance’s dimensions and installation requirements.
What does “glass cooktop” mean?
“Glass cooktop” describes the cooking surface, not the fuel or heating technology. Smooth glass may cover a radiant electric element, an induction system, or—in some products—a gas burner. Check the exact appliance listing and manual before comparing models or following care advice.
On a radiant electric cooktop, an element beneath the glass heats the surface, which transfers heat to the pan. Induction cooktops also have a glass surface, but use an electromagnetic field to heat suitable cookware. GE explains the distinction in its radiant and induction comparison; the U.S. Department of Energy describes induction’s direct transfer of currents to cookware on the glass surface in its induction cooking overview.
Radiant electric vs. induction
| What to compare | Radiant electric under glass | Induction under glass |
| How it heats | An element heats the glass, which transfers heat to the cookware. | An electromagnetic field heats compatible cookware directly. |
| Cookware | Flat-bottom pans help maintain contact and produce good results. | Requires ferrous, induction-compatible cookware. A magnet that sticks to the pan is a useful compatibility clue. |
| After switching off | The glass can remain hot and continue transferring heat after the control is off. | The DOE says the surface does not get as hot as other cooktops when cookware is removed; still follow the model’s hot-surface warnings. |
| Care | Use cleaner and tools approved for the exact model. | Follow the model’s ceramic-glass care directions and avoid damaging abrasives. |
| What to verify before buying | Cooking zones, power, dimensions, controls, and installation requirements. | Cookware compatibility, zones, power, dimensions, controls, and installation requirements. |
The DOE reports that a Consumer Reports comparison found induction cooktops boiled water 20–40% faster than the tested gas and traditional electric cooktops. That is a reported test comparison, not a promise about every appliance, pan, or cooking task. See the DOE induction cooking overview.

How to choose a cooktop that fits your kitchen
- Start with the technology. Decide whether radiant electric or induction better suits your cooking habits and cookware. If you are considering gas, confirm that the exact product is a gas cooktop rather than assuming every glass surface is electric.
- Check your pans. Radiant models work best with flat-bottom cookware. For induction, check the manufacturer’s compatibility guidance and try a magnet on the pan’s base as a first screen.
- Measure and verify installation details. Compare the cutout and overall dimensions, required electrical or gas connection, and any clearance requirements with the exact model’s official specifications.
- Compare controls and zones. Consider whether the number and size of cooking zones suit the pans you use, and whether the control layout is comfortable for your kitchen.
- Review care and service information. Check the appliance manual for approved cleaners, tools, warnings, and available support before purchasing.
For example, GE identifies the JP256BMBB as a 21-inch electric radiant cooktop, while its support page lists manufacture dates from September 2007 through December 2020. This establishes the model type, not current retail availability or a present-day recommendation. See GE’s JP256BMBB support page and confirm current specifications and support directly before relying on them.
How to clean a glass cooktop
Follow the manual for your exact appliance and surface. Manufacturer instructions differ on products, timing, and handling; a method approved for one cooktop should not automatically be applied to another.

- PORTABLE INDUCTION BURNER: Duxtop induction cooktop uses 110/120 V 15 amp electrical outlet–standard in all North American homes. ETL listed and built to North American electrical standards. It is lightweight and compact for easy handling and storage
- Choose from 20 preset power levels (100 to 1800 W) and 20 preset temperature level settings (100 °F to 460 °F). With an 83% energy efficiency, induction burner is more efficient than traditional gas or electric stoves
- DIGITAL LCD SENSOR: Touch control panel: child safety lock keeps the cooking and timer settings from being accidentally changed once they have been set; fast boil button; keep warm button (for 1-30 minutes at 140 °F); up to 10-hour timer button
- Induction stoves rely on cookware to heat, so it’s essential to choose magnetic bottom cookware with a minimum diameter of 5 inches. Auto-pan detection will shut off automatically after 60 seconds if no cookware, or the incorrect cookware is detected
- Although induction itself is a noiseless process, there may be high pitched sounds from the cookware due to multiple layers of metals sandwiched together. Please allow the induction cooker to cool down before cleaning
Routine cleaning
For GE glass cooktops, GE recommends an approved ceramic cooktop cleaner, giving Weiman’s and CeramaBryte as examples. Its cleaning instructions describe applying a small amount, wiping with a paper towel or CeramaBryte pad, then removing residue with a dry cloth or paper towel. Remove cleaner residue before heating the cooktop, and consult the owner’s manual for any additional directions.
Burned-on residue
GE advises letting the cooktop cool, applying cleaner, and using its cleaning pad; for heavy residue, it describes using a razor scraper at about a 45-degree angle. Whirlpool likewise recommends a scraper designed for ceramic glass and says to follow the scraper’s product label and the cooktop directions. Because timing and handling can vary, use only the procedure approved for your model. See GE’s cleaning guidance and Whirlpool’s ceramic-glass cleaning instructions.

Products and habits to avoid
Whirlpool warns against steel wool, abrasive powder cleansers, chlorine bleach, rust remover, and ammonia on its ceramic-glass surfaces. GE says its glass is scratch resistant, not scratch proof: do not slide cookware across it or use the cooking surface as a cutting board. Check the Whirlpool cleaning and maintenance guidance and the directions for your own model before selecting a product or tool.

GE’s safety instructions warn that radiant glass retains heat after the controls are off. Watch for the hot-surface indicator and follow the appliance manual’s warnings even when a cooking zone looks cool. GE states: “The glass surface of the cooktop will retain heat after the controls have been turned off.” This is manufacturer guidance for radiant surface units, not a measurement of every cooktop.
