The best air conditioner for a studio apartment is one sized for the area you need to cool and compatible with your window, building rules, and installation options. For many studios, a window room AC is the practical starting point; a portable unit or ductless mini-split may fit different constraints. Measure first: ENERGY STAR’s room-AC chart assumes an 8-foot ceiling and recommends 5,000 Btu/h for 100–150 square feet, 6,000 for 150–250, 7,000 for 250–300, and 8,000 for 300–350 square feet.
Start with the studio’s size, not the biggest unit you can buy
Measure the floor area that actually needs cooling. In an open-plan studio, that usually means the connected living and sleeping space, rather than a separate bathroom or closet. ENERGY STAR’s published room-air-conditioner sizing chart uses an 8-foot ceiling as its baseline:
| Area to cool | Baseline capacity |
|---|---|
| 100–150 sq ft | 5,000 Btu/h |
| 150–250 sq ft | 6,000 Btu/h |
| 250–300 sq ft | 7,000 Btu/h |
| 300–350 sq ft | 8,000 Btu/h |
These are ENERGY STAR’s current room-AC guidance figures, accessed in 2026, not a guarantee for every layout. A higher ceiling or unusual room conditions can change what is appropriate. Use the chart as a starting point and apply the agency’s published adjustments where they fit:
- For a heavily shaded room, reduce the recommended capacity by 10%.
- For a very sunny room, increase it by 10%.
- Add 600 Btu/h for each regular occupant beyond two.
- Add 4,000 Btu/h if the unit will be used in a kitchen.
Those adjustments are ENERGY STAR’s guidance; they are not a custom engineering calculation for a particular apartment. If your ceiling is high, the space has an unusual shape, or connected rooms make the cooling area hard to define, ask a qualified professional or the manufacturer for sizing advice.

Why an oversized AC can feel worse
A larger unit is not automatically more comfortable. ENERGY STAR warns that an oversized air conditioner can cost more, waste energy, and cool the room before removing enough moisture. That can leave the space feeling damp or clammy. Its advice is succinct: “bigger is not always better!” Choose capacity for the real cooling area and conditions rather than buying extra capacity as insurance.
Choose an AC type that fits the apartment
Room ACs, portable ACs, and ductless mini-splits are different equipment categories. The right choice depends as much on installation feasibility as on cooling capacity.

Window room air conditioner
A window unit is the natural first option when the window design, lease, building rules, and installation conditions allow it. Check the opening’s dimensions and style against the specific unit’s installation requirements, including any support or clearance requirements. ENERGY STAR recommends looking for certified products and appropriate capacity. Some U-shaped or saddle-style units bracket the sill, place the compressor outside, and may allow the window to open and close; confirm the exact model’s fit and installation instructions rather than assuming every window or unit is compatible.
Portable air conditioner
A portable AC can be an alternative when a window unit cannot be installed, but it still needs a compatible way to exhaust hot air through a window. Check that the supplied or separately required window panel fits your window and that the model’s current capacity rating suits the space. Portable AC is its own product category; do not assume a capacity figure or efficiency rating is directly comparable with a window unit without checking the applicable product information.

Ductless mini-split
A ductless system is a more permanent option for an owner or renter with permission and a feasible installation. It is not simply another plug-in room AC: the equipment and installation needs differ. ENERGY STAR says a contractor should verify the system size using Manual J. The U.S. Department of Energy categorizes mini-splits as central air conditioners and heat pumps rather than room air conditioners.

- Capacity and coverage: Match the model’s capacity to measured floor area, ceiling height, sun exposure, regular occupancy, and kitchen heat. Do not treat a manufacturer’s coverage estimate as a substitute for checking the room conditions.
- Installation fit: Confirm window dimensions and style, building or lease permission, required support, and— for a portable model—whether the exhaust panel can be fitted and sealed.
- Efficiency: Look for ENERGY STAR certification and check the model’s current efficiency label or listing. Compare the same kind of rating across comparable products rather than mixing categories.
- Sound and airflow: Consider variable-speed control, airflow direction, and where the unit will sit in relation to the bed or work area. ENERGY STAR notes that variable-speed units can regulate output and operate quietly; that is general guidance, not a measured noise comparison among specific models.
- Convenience: Decide whether controls, scheduling, connected features, or retaining access to the window matter for your room.
Install and seal the unit carefully
A correctly chosen AC can still underperform if it is installed poorly. Follow the model’s manual and use the supplied insulation materials to close installation gaps, as ENERGY STAR recommends. Pay particular attention to the window panel or opening around the unit: an imperfect seal can let outdoor air back into the room. Do not improvise around structural supports or building requirements; verify the installation method for your exact model and apartment.
What “best” means for a studio apartment
There is no single best model established for every studio in the available evidence. The practical decision is to find a properly sized, certified room AC that fits the apartment’s installation constraints—or choose a portable or professionally installed ductless option when those constraints rule out a window unit. Current model rankings, retailer prices, live availability, and measured sound comparisons are not established here, so verify those details against the specific product listing before buying.
