If a range hood cannot vent outdoors, a compatible charcoal filter can reduce some cooking odors by recirculating air through grease and carbon filters and back into the kitchen. It does not remove cooking air, heat, humidity, or all smoke and pollutants from the home. When exterior ducting is practical, it is generally the better way to exhaust cooking air; when it is not, choose a hood designed or approved for recirculation and verify the exact kit and filter for its model.
What a charcoal-filter range hood can—and cannot—do
A ductless hood, also called a non-vented or recirculating hood, draws air through a grease filter and then a charcoal filter before returning it to the room. GE describes this arrangement as removing odors: GE’s explanation of recirculating under-cabinet hoods.
The charcoal stage reduces some cooking odors; it does not send the air outdoors. Broan-NuTone says non-ducted filters trap some grease and odors, while humidity, smoke, and heat are recirculated into the home. Its guidance is that range hoods should be ducted outside when possible: Broan-NuTone range hood FAQ.
For a kitchen project, treat recirculation as a constrained alternative where exterior ducting is not feasible—not as equivalent ventilation. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal odor-removal percentage or independent performance winner among charcoal-filter hoods.

How to choose a ductless or convertible hood
“Best” depends first on whether the hood can be installed in the configuration your kitchen allows. Compare models using the same practical criteria, and confirm the details in the hood’s installation instructions before purchase.
- Installation mode: Determine whether the hood is recirculation-only, convertible, or designed only for ducted installation. A convertible hood may require a separate non-duct kit.
- Size and fit: Match the hood width and mounting arrangement to the cooktop and cabinetry, and follow the model’s installation and clearance requirements.
- Kit and filter compatibility: Confirm the exact accessory and replacement-filter part number for the complete hood model. Parts are not universal, even within a brand.
- Upkeep: Check the owner’s manual for charcoal-filter replacement guidance and whether the metal grease filter can be washed.
- Airflow and noise information: Compare ratings only when they apply to the same installation mode and measurement basis. Broan says there is no national CFM or sone measurement standard for non-ducted hoods, so ducted and recirculating ratings should not be treated as directly equivalent.

A conversion kit may include more than a charcoal filter. Check the manufacturer’s listing and installation instructions to identify what is supplied and what must be purchased separately; do not assume a filter alone makes a ducted hood suitable for recirculation.

Charcoal and carbon filters are consumables. Replacement timing varies by manufacturer and use, so use the schedule and odor checks specified for the exact hood rather than treating any one interval as universal.

GE advises changing its charcoal filter when cooking odors are detected in the exhaust. Bosch says its carbon/charcoal filters cannot be cleaned; do not wash or attempt to restore a charcoal filter unless the hood’s manual explicitly says otherwise. Before ordering or installing
- Find the complete hood model number. Use the product label or owner’s documentation; a brand name or hood series alone may not identify the right filter.
- Check the manual for approved installation modes. Confirm that recirculation is permitted and note any ductless conversion kit, clearance, or electrical-location requirements.
- Match the kit and filter part numbers. Confirm compatibility with the exact hood and blower configuration, and check whether the kit includes the charcoal filters or other required components.
- Plan for replacement. Check the specified filter and replacement schedule before committing to a model, particularly if access to the correct part may be difficult.
- Install as directed. Follow the hood and kit instructions; if the work involves electrical changes or construction, use a qualified installer where required.
