The best ceramic floor tile depends on the room, the look you want, and the selected tile’s documented performance—not on a category name alone. Compare pressed floor, quarry, mosaic, and porcelain tiles, then confirm that the specific product is designated for floors and suits its intended use.

Which ceramic floor tile options should you compare?

ANSI A137.1 covers multiple ceramic tile categories, including pressed floor, quarry, mosaic, and porcelain tile. Its 2022 edition is listed in the ANSI catalog as revising the 2021 edition. The standard addresses tile types, sizes, physical properties, and grading procedures; the Tile Council of North America’s description also outlines its scope.

These categories provide a useful shortlist, not a universal ranking. For any candidate—including a particular ceramic floor tile, porcelain floor tile, quarry tile, or mosaic floor tile—check its current manufacturer documentation for floor use and the properties relevant to the room.

Pressed floor tile

Pressed floor tile is a named category in ANSI A137.1. Confirm that the exact product is designated for floor installation and review its technical data rather than relying on the category name by itself.

Quarry tile

Quarry tile is another category to consider. Compare the product’s current specifications and appearance with other floor-designated choices; the category alone does not establish its suitability for a particular room.

Mosaic tile

Mosaic tile offers a different visual scale and layout from larger formats. Its category does not establish a particular slip performance or best use, so check the selected product’s technical information for the intended conditions.

Porcelain tile

Porcelain is a classification of ceramic tile based on water absorption. ANSI defines it as tile with water absorption of 0.5% or less, measured using ASTM C373. That threshold helps distinguish porcelain, but it does not by itself determine whether a tile suits a specific room or use. ANSI explains the distinction in “The Eminence of Porcelain Tile”.

How should you assess durability and floor suitability?

Start with the exact product’s current technical data. ANSI A137.1 provides a framework for physical properties and grading, but the standards information cited here does not establish one universal rating threshold for every room, household, or use.

Manises Cuero 13-1/8" x 13-1/8" Porcelain Floor and Wall Tile
  • Coverage and Packaging: 10.98 square feet, 9 pieces per case; Case weight is 38.25 lbs
  • Quality Grade: Grade 1, first-quality porcelain tile for floor and wall use
  • Tile Dimensions: 13.13 in. width x 13.13 in. length x 0.32 in. thick
  • Finish Style: Glazed, slightly textured finish with a low sheen and slight variation in tone
  • PEI Rating: PEI Rating III is suitable for medium-duty residential floors including kitchens, halls, corridors, balconies, terraces and areas used more often with normal footwear and small amounts of dirt
  • Floor-use designation: Confirm the manufacturer identifies the specific tile for floor installation and that its stated intended use fits the room.
  • Abrasion: Check the product’s documented abrasion information against the expected traffic. Do not assume a category name establishes an abrasion rating.
  • Wet-floor suitability: Review product-specific wet-use information for the conditions where the tile will be installed. No universal slip value for all rooms or users is established by the sources cited here.
  • Water absorption: Use the porcelain classification as one comparison point, not as a complete suitability assessment.

Do not infer durability, safety, or maintenance needs from “glazed,” “unglazed,” “porcelain,” or another category label alone. ANSI’s definition allows ceramic tile to have either a glazed or unglazed face. For a product-specific decision, rely on its documented properties and intended use.

How do appearance and variation affect the choice?

Tile appearance includes both its surface and the amount of variation across pieces. ANSI describes aesthetic variation classes V0 through V4 as degrees of overall color and/or texture variation. Ask the manufacturer for the product’s stated class and review actual samples so you can judge how that variation will look across the planned floor.

ANSI describes ceramic tile as “A ceramic surfacing unit, usually relatively thin in relation to facial area, having either a glazed or unglazed face and fired above red heat in the course of manufacture to a temperature sufficiently high to produce specific physical properties and characteristics.” The definition explains the range covered by the term; it does not rank finishes or determine which appearance is right for your home.

What should you verify before choosing a tile?

  1. Match the tile to the room. Identify the room’s intended use and confirm the exact product is designated for floor installation and appropriate to those conditions.
  2. Compare current product specifications. Review the manufacturer’s technical data and relevant standard information, including documented abrasion and wet-use performance. If a decision depends on a rating, ask for the value rather than assuming it from the tile category.
  3. Check absorption and finish. Note whether the product is classified as porcelain and whether its face is glazed or unglazed. Treat these as product characteristics, not stand-alone recommendations.
  4. Review samples and variation. Compare the actual color, texture, format, and stated V0–V4 variation class with the look you want.
  5. Confirm the installation plan. Check the tile maker’s current instructions for dimensions, layout, substrate, setting materials, grout, and installer requirements. Do not assume one installation method fits every tile.

Which ceramic tile is best for a home floor?

There is no single best option established for every home. Pressed floor, quarry, mosaic, and porcelain tiles are categories worth comparing, but the right choice is the particular product whose documented floor use and performance fit the room, alongside the appearance and format you prefer. A category label or porcelain absorption classification alone cannot settle that decision.
