For a mold or fungus concern, address leaks and other moisture sources and clean affected materials first; use filtration only as a supplement.
What an air purifier can—and cannot—do about fungus
“Fungus” is a broad term; in homes, people often use it when they are concerned about mold. Mold can release particles into the air, and a portable particle-filtering air cleaner may capture some of those particles while they pass through the unit. It works in a single room or area, not throughout a home unless separate equipment serves those spaces.
Many mold-related particles settle on floors, furnishings, and other surfaces. An air cleaner will not remove settled particles unless they become airborne again and pass through the device. It also does not remove mold growth from building materials, stop a leak, or correct persistent dampness. The EPA puts it plainly: “Portable air cleaners and furnace/HVAC filters do not address the cause of mold and musty odors.” U.S. EPA, Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home.
No air cleaner eliminates every indoor pollutant. Filtration can be one part of improving indoor air, but it is not mold remediation and cannot guarantee that exposure or symptoms will stop.

Deal with the moisture and mold first
Find and correct the source of water—such as a leak or recurring water intrusion—and clean mold promptly. The EPA recommends drying water-damaged areas and items within 24–48 hours to help prevent mold growth. That is a prevention window, not a guarantee that mold will not grow. Follow the EPA’s mold cleanup guidance for the affected materials and situation.
The EPA recommends keeping indoor humidity between 30 and 50 percent. A humidity gauge can help you monitor room conditions; a reading in that range is a general indoor-air recommendation, not proof that a building is mold-free or a guarantee against future growth. How to choose a purifier for a room
Use CADR to match the unit to the space
For particle removal, compare the unit’s clean air delivery rate (CADR) with the size of the room or area you want to serve. The EPA explains that a higher CADR means the cleaner can filter more particles and serve a larger area. Choose a unit sized for the room where you spend time or where airborne particles are a concern; a small device is not a substitute for equipment appropriate to a larger open area.
Consider the setting you will actually use
Higher fan speeds and longer operation generally increase filtration, according to the EPA. Compare performance at the settings you can realistically run, rather than relying only on a unit’s quietest or lowest setting. Noise and model-specific performance vary, so check those details for the particular unit before buying.

Check filter upkeep and safety features
- Confirm which replacement filter fits the exact model and follow the manufacturer’s replacement schedule. A dirty or overloaded filter will not work well.
- Avoid air cleaners that intentionally produce ozone, which can irritate the lungs. The EPA notes potential ozone-emission concerns with some electrostatic precipitators, ionizers, UV lights without adequate lamp coatings, and plasma cleaners.
- Do not treat UV or ionization marketing as proof that a device removes mold growth or makes spores harmless. The EPA’s technical summary says effective destruction of airborne fungal and bacterial spores likely requires greater UV exposure than typical residential UVGI units provide, and it found no research showing UV disinfection reduces mold allergenicity.

Air cleaners may help some people, but a health benefit is not assured. The EPA reports: “Multiple studies with portable HEPA air cleaners have found improvements in one or more allergy and/or asthma symptom(s). The studies do not always show major improvements, and they do not show improvements in all symptoms.” A purifier should not be presented as a treatment for allergy or asthma, or as a replacement for addressing mold and dampness. The EPA discusses this evidence in its page on whether air cleaners reduce health risks.
