In light cement bamboo frame (LCBF) construction—also called bahareque encementado—cement mortar is used as render over reinforced bamboo elements. The right specification depends on the wall system, structural design, local requirements, exposure and product documentation.
What “bamboo mortar” means in construction
ISO 22156:2021 describes LCBF as a construction system in which cement mortar render is applied to bamboo strips, flattened bamboo or small-diameter bamboo attached to bamboo or timber framing. The render and reinforcement form part of a composite bamboo shear-wall system; the mortar is not a standalone product that makes any bamboo wall structurally sound. ISO also describes small-gauge metal mesh reinforcement and an expanded-metal-lath approach. ISO 22156:2021 names this system as light cement bamboo frame, bahareque encementado and composite bamboo shear walls.
First identify the bamboo building system
Light cement bamboo frame
If the project is LCBF, the mortar is a render within a designed wall assembly. The type of bamboo element, framing, reinforcement and detailing must be considered together. The system description is not a ready-to-use mix recipe or a recommendation to apply ordinary mortar directly to any bamboo surface.
Round-bamboo structures and other systems
ISO 22156:2021 addresses structures whose primary load-bearing system is round bamboo or bamboo-frame shear panels. Its scope excludes engineered bamboo products and bamboo-reinforced materials in which bamboo is not the primary load-bearing constituent. Do not assume that guidance for LCBF render applies to a separate masonry wall, a different bamboo assembly or every use of bamboo.

Glued laminated bamboo
Glued laminated bamboo members are a distinct engineered structural product. ISO 7567:2024 specifies components of glued laminated bamboo members intended for structural use; it does not specify a mortar. A project using glulam should follow the design and material requirements for that system rather than treating it as round-culm bamboo construction.
How to choose a mortar or render specification
- Confirm the wall assembly. Ask the designer or builder whether the project is LCBF/bahareque encementado, bamboo framing alongside masonry, or another system. The render description in ISO 22156 applies to LCBF, not automatically to all bamboo buildings.
- Use the applicable structural design and local requirements. The relevant standard and code depend on the project location and construction system. ISO 22156 addresses structural design within its defined bamboo scope; it is not a universal mortar specification.
- Specify for the actual exposure and durability needs. Have the project designer account for the intended exposure and durability requirements. The standards cited here do not provide a project-specific mix suitable for every climate or building.
- Coordinate reinforcement and detailing. In LCBF, reinforcement is part of the wall system. ISO describes mesh and expanded-metal-lath approaches, but the appropriate detail must come from the full design and applicable requirements.
- Check the material documentation. Require the product specification to match the project design and local acceptance requirements. A material’s general suitability for masonry mortar does not by itself establish its suitability for a particular bamboo-frame render assembly.
Where hydrated masonry lime fits
For readers comparing material categories, ASTM C207-24 covers hydrated lime for masonry purposes. ASTM states that Types N and S are suitable for mortar, scratch and brown coats of cement plaster, stucco, and addition to Portland-cement concrete. ASTM C207-24 therefore supports looking for hydrated lime specified for masonry mortar, but it does not make hydrated lime a bamboo-specific recommendation or identify a universal bamboo mix. Confirm the product type against the project specification and local requirements.

Can any option be called eco-friendly?
Not from the standards and product suitability information cited here. They establish the scope of construction systems and certain material uses, not a comparative environmental ranking. No comparative life-cycle assessment, carbon ranking or product-specific environmental declaration is established by these sources. To substantiate an environmental claim, evaluate documentation for the actual product and project rather than relying on the words “lime,” “natural” or “bamboo.”
