To choose well, measure the full installation space, compare capacity and configuration, and use EnergyGuide and ENERGY STAR data to assess efficiency. One documented example is Samsung’s 27-inch Bespoke AI Vented Laundry Combo, an all-in-one washer-dryer—not a standalone washer or a ranked best pick.
What “27-inch washer” means—and what it doesn’t
Twenty-seven inches usually describes a washer’s nominal width, not the full space it needs. Height, depth, door swing, and installation clearances can determine whether a machine fits. ENERGY STAR also notes that certified washers come in different widths and capacities, so use the exact model’s specifications rather than treating 27 inches as a complete fit description.

For example, Samsung’s U.S. listing gives its Bespoke AI Vented Laundry Combo dimensions of 27 × 43¾ × 34½ inches and a washer capacity of 5.3 cu. ft. Those measurements are for that specific all-in-one model; they are not typical dimensions for every washer. Samsung Bespoke AI Vented Laundry Combo.
Measure the laundry space before comparing models
Record the available width, height, and depth, then check the manufacturer’s installation documentation for the candidate model. Allow for the door to open and for the connections and clearances specified in that documentation. A washer that fits the opening on paper may still be impractical if its door blocks a walkway or its installation requirements exceed the space.

- Access and installation: Consider door clearance and follow the model’s installation instructions for the location and connections.
Choose capacity and configuration for your household
Capacity is useful only when it matches both the space and the loads you wash. ENERGY STAR recommends considering where the washer will go and whether typical loads are small or large. Think about bulky items and how often you run laundry; a larger drum is not automatically the better choice if it compromises fit or does not suit your usual loads.
Front-load, top-load, or washer-dryer combo
Compare the configuration as well as the width. A front-load or top-load washer is a different purchase from an all-in-one washer-dryer combo, which also includes drying. ENERGY STAR’s general comparison says front-load washers use about 50% less energy and water than top-load agitator washers, and about 25% less than top-load impeller washers. These are broad comparisons from the program, not a guarantee that every front-loader will outperform every individual top-loader.
A combo can be worth considering if combining washing and drying addresses your space or laundry needs, but do not compare it as though it were a standalone washer. Check its full specifications and installation requirements before deciding whether the combined format works for your household.

Compare efficiency with the right labels and measures
Use the EnergyGuide label to compare estimated energy use and annual operating costs among similar models. For eligible models, ENERGY STAR’s Integrated Modified Energy Factor (IMEF) and Integrated Water Factor (IWF) provide further comparison measures: higher IMEF and lower IWF indicate better efficiency under those measures. Compare like with like—such as models in the same configuration and relevant capacity range—and treat these figures as efficiency indicators, not a complete measure of cleaning performance or ownership cost.

The program also cites about 300 laundry loads per year and estimates about $530 in energy-cost savings over the product lifetime for models that have earned the label. These are program-level figures and estimates, not guaranteed results for a particular household or model. For full-sized ENERGY STAR washers, the program reports 14 gallons per load compared with 20 gallons for a standard machine. ENERGY STAR clothes washer guidance.
Understand what the ENERGY STAR criteria establish
The program’s residential washer criteria, changed effective April 22, 2021, set efficiency thresholds for specified capacity and configuration categories. For residential front-load washers above 2.5 cu. ft., the thresholds are IMEF ≥ 2.76 and IWF ≤ 3.2; for residential top-load washers above 2.5 cu. ft., they are IMEF ≥ 2.06 and IWF ≤ 4.3. These are qualification thresholds, not a general quality score or a ranking of the best machines.

An ENERGY STAR label is a useful way to narrow the field, but it does not replace checking model-specific dimensions, capacity, and EnergyGuide estimates. The program’s “Most Efficient” designation is also time-bound: its washer page identifies the selected models as the 2025 list. Treat that page as recognition for that year, not a permanent ranking or assurance that a listed model is available where you live. ENERGY STAR Most Efficient Clothes Washers.
What to verify before buying
Once a candidate fits your space and meets your efficiency priorities, confirm the practical ownership details directly for that exact model. Current price, warranty, local service, cycle options, and availability are model- and location-specific; the evidence cited here does not establish comparisons for those factors.
Quick Recap
- Confirm the exact model number and complete dimensions in manufacturer documentation.
- Check the EnergyGuide estimate and, when available, ENERGY STAR model data.
- Verify capacity and configuration against your typical loads and laundry setup.
- Check warranty terms, service options in your area, cycle needs, and current local availability before purchase.
