What is kitchen banquette seating?
A banquette is bench seating placed against a wall or in a corner and paired with a dining table. It can turn a window wall, corner, or otherwise awkward area into a defined eating nook. The bench, table, and circulation should be planned as one layout so diners can sit down, use the table comfortably, and get back out.

A fixed seat can be tailored to the room, while movable seating avoids a custom installation. Homes & Gardens quotes Davonport managing director Richard Davonport: “Banquette seating works best when it is treated as part of the architecture of the kitchen rather than as a feature added afterwards,” (Homes & Gardens). That approach is especially useful when coordinating a built-in with cabinetry or storage; it does not mean a freestanding bench cannot make a practical nook.
Banquette seating dimensions: where to start
One design guide gives approximately 18 inches (46 cm) for residential seat height, 18–20 inches (46–51 cm) of usable seat depth after accounting for the back cushion, and about 24 inches (61 cm) of bench width per person as planning references. Fine Homebuilding’s construction example uses an 18-inch seat depth and a back angle of 7–9 degrees; a more recent guide recommends a slight recline (Interior Design Trends; Fine Homebuilding).

These are source-specific design examples, not a code requirement or a single industry standard. Do not infer an exact number of diners from bench length alone. Cushion thickness and compression, the finished seat height, the table apron, and the users all affect the usable fit.
Mock up the finished seat and table relationship
- Measure usable seat depth from the front edge to the back support, allowing for any cushion that reduces the sitting surface.
- Check the finished seat height with the intended cushion in place and occupied; a cushion compresses under a sitter.
- Compare the table height and underside apron with the seated position. An apron or support can interfere with knees even when the table appears to fit beside the bench.
- Check table-leg placement and whether diners can slide in and leave without awkwardly negotiating a corner or a support.
If practical, mark the proposed bench and table footprint and try sitting at the intended height before committing to a fixed build or ordering furniture. A simple plan view alone may not reveal how the table apron, legs, or cushion affect the actual seating position.

What size table works with banquette seating?
Choose the table alongside the bench, not as a later add-on. Its size and base need to work with the seat depth, apron, corner arrangement, and any chairs on the open side. A pedestal base can keep table legs out of the way as people slide along a bench (Livingetc).
For an L-shaped banquette, check that the corner seat is accessible and that the table does not leave diners trapped or make the open-side chairs difficult to use. Walk the approach and exit routes in the actual kitchen, including the space needed to pull out a chair if one is part of the arrangement. There is no single residential clearance dimension established here that suits every kitchen layout.

Storage, cushions, and finishes to plan before installation
Make under-seat storage usable
Storage beneath a built-in seat can put otherwise unused space to work, but decide how it opens and whether someone can reach it with the table in its normal position. A lid, drawer, or other access method should suit both the room and the way the nook will be used (iKitchen).
Measure for a banquette seat cushion
Before ordering a fitted cushion or kitchen bench pad, measure the usable flat seat surface and check the cushion’s finished depth against the table apron and intended sitting position. - Choose the installation type. Decide whether the room benefits from a fixed, tailored seat or a movable bench that can be changed or replaced.
- Measure the actual space. Record the wall or corner, intended bench footprint, and routes people use to approach and leave the table.
