For a typical residential dryer, the best starting point is a smooth-interior metal permanent exhaust duct, nominally 4 inches in diameter. Keep it short and direct, and use a separate, single UL 2158A-listed transition duct between the dryer and permanent duct when the appliance instructions call for one. Check the dryer’s installation manual and locally adopted code before choosing the size, route, and length.
Choose the permanent duct and connector separately
A dryer vent has two distinct parts: the permanent exhaust duct through the building and the short transition duct connecting the appliance to that system. Requirements for one do not automatically apply to the other. The 2024 International Residential Code (IRC) sets a model-code baseline, but local adoption and amendments may differ.

What kind of dryer vent pipe is best?
For the permanent run, smooth-interior metal duct is the evidence-backed choice in the 2024 IRC. The code states: “Exhaust ducts shall have a smooth interior finish and shall be constructed of metal not less than 0.0157 inch (0.3950 mm) in thickness (No. 28 gage).” It specifies a nominal 4-inch diameter. A smooth interior and a direct route avoid adding unnecessary bends or obstructions to the exhaust path. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Building America Solution Center likewise recommends a short, straight duct path and installation according to manufacturer instructions and local code. Can you use flexible duct for a dryer?
Do not treat flexible transition duct as a substitute for the permanent exhaust duct. The 2024 IRC requires the connector to be a single length listed and labeled to UL 2158A, no longer than 8 feet, and not concealed within construction. It states: “Transition ducts used to connect the dryer to the exhaust duct system shall be a single length that is listed and labeled in accordance with UL 2158A.” 2024 IRC, Chapter 15
UL 2158A applies to transition ducts that connect a dryer to permanent building ductwork; the listing does not replace code or appliance requirements for the permanent run. Manufacturer guidance can be more specific. GE Appliances requires rigid or flexible metal ducting and notes that UL-listed semi-rigid duct can be used at 8 feet or less; check the instructions for your exact dryer model before buying or installing a connector. GE Appliances: Dryer FAQs

There is no single maximum that applies to every dryer installation. Under the 2024 IRC’s specified-length method, the maximum starts at 35 feet, measured from the transition-duct connection to the outlet terminal; the transition duct itself is excluded. Fittings reduce the permitted length. The IRC also allows the dryer manufacturer’s installation instructions to determine duct size and maximum length. Follow the applicable local code and the instructions for your model rather than assuming the 35-foot figure is available in every home. 2024 IRC, Chapter 15

The code’s fitting table assigns different equivalent lengths. For example, a 4-inch-radius mitered 90-degree elbow counts as 5 feet; a 6-inch-radius smooth 90-degree elbow counts as 1 foot 9 inches; and a 10-inch-radius smooth 90-degree elbow counts as 1 foot 6 inches. Plan a route that preserves airflow
- Keep the path as short and straight as the building layout allows. DOE Building America Solution Center
- Minimize fittings and calculate their equivalent lengths under the applicable method.
- Follow the dryer manual and local code for duct size, maximum length, and installation details.
- Keep the permanent duct’s interior clear of protruding fasteners. The 2024 IRC limits fastener penetration to 1/8 inch.
- Where a duct is enclosed, avoid deforming it with the surrounding cavity.
What to check before buying

- Confirm local requirements. Ask the local building department or a qualified installer which residential code and amendments apply; the 2024 IRC is a model code, not a guarantee of local adoption.
- Measure the route. Include bends and their applicable equivalent lengths, and distinguish the permanent run from the transition connector.
- Match each product to its role. Select smooth-interior metal for the permanent duct and a compatible UL 2158A-listed transition duct when required. Do not rely on a transition-duct label as proof that the permanent duct meets code.
