For most shoppers, the choice is between premeasured packs or pods, gel, and powder. Consumer Reports’ comparison updated May 8, 2026 named Cascade Platinum ActionPacs with Dawn the most effective detergent among the packs and gels it tested; its broader finding was that the best-performing packs cleaned better than most tested gels. That is a result from its tested products and methods, not a guarantee for every dishwasher or load.
Which dishwasher detergent is best?
If cleaning performance is your priority, Consumer Reports’ May 8, 2026 comparison points to packs: the best-performing packs in its tests cleaned better than most of the tested gels. Its top product among the packs and gels it tested was Cascade Platinum ActionPacs with Dawn. Finish Powerball Ultimate and Presto! Triple Action Dishwasher Pacs were also identified as strong or above-average pack options. Among gels, Great Value Dishwasher Gel and Cascade Complete + Oxi Dawn were notable options.
Those results are a useful starting point, not a universal ranking. A detergent can clean food well yet leave more spots or film, and a product’s fit can depend on your cycle, water conditions, price per load, and whether you want a premeasured dose. Product rankings, formulas, and availability can change.
How packs, gel, and powder differ
| Format | What to expect | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Packs, pods, or tablets | Premeasured and convenient. Consumer Reports found that its best-performing packs cleaned better than most gels in the comparison updated May 8, 2026. | Cleaning, cost per load, convenience, packaging preference, and whether the form dissolves fully on your cycle. |
| Gel | You measure the dose, which allows adjustment. Consumer Reports’ November 12, 2025 buying guide said gels typically cost less per load than packs; Great Value Dishwasher Gel was a strong tested example. | Cleaning, film and spots, dose control, and cost per load. |
| Powder | You measure the dose. Consumer Reports said powder detergents were increasingly uncommon and were not included in its latest tests. | Current availability, dosing, packaging preference, and the limits of recent comparative performance evidence. |
Consumer Reports’ September 7, 2025 article reported that 71 percent of respondents in its Instagram audience poll chose pods, 20 percent chose liquid, and 9 percent chose powder. That was a poll of its Instagram audience—not a representative survey or a measure of cleaning performance.

Compare cleaning, spots, and residue separately
“Sparkling clean” can mean several different things: food removed, no cloudy film, and few water spots. A detergent’s score on one outcome does not establish that it will lead on the others. Consumer Reports describes testing baked-on starchy soil on plates and assessing cleaning after a normal wash. It separately runs repeated cycles with very hard water and checks for haze and water spots. Its results therefore reflect its test methods and the products included, rather than every combination of machine, water, detergent, and soil.
Ingredient labels alone are not a reliable shortcut to a winner. Consumer Reports engineer Larry Ciufo, who oversees its dishwasher detergent testing, said: “Generally, enzymes do help,” says Larry Ciufo, the engineer who oversees Consumer Reports’ dishwasher detergent testing. “But it’s too complicated to pin it on one ingredient.” Detergent packs contain ingredient mixtures, and combinations can affect results; that statement does not establish a universal ranking for any single ingredient.

How to compare detergent prices
Compare the cost per wash, not the tub or pouch price alone. Package counts and recommended doses differ, and published price ranges are dated snapshots rather than live shelf prices.
| Source and date | Format or products covered | Reported cost per load |
|---|---|---|
| Consumer Reports comparison, updated May 8, 2026 | Nearly 30 detergent packs and gels | 7 to 57 cents per load |
| Consumer Reports buying guide, updated November 12, 2025 | Packs | 12 to 57 cents per load |
| Consumer Reports buying guide, updated November 12, 2025 | Gels | 7 to 44 cents per load |
Use those figures to understand the range Consumer Reports reported on those dates, not as current quotes from a retailer. For a product you are considering, divide its price by the number of doses at the stated dose size; if you use more or less than the label dose, your actual cost per wash will differ.

Choose based on your dishwasher and routine
- Choose a pack when: you want a premeasured dose and value convenience, and a product performs well for your cleaning needs.
- Choose gel when: you want control over how much detergent you measure or prefer an option that may cost less per load than packs, as described in Consumer Reports’ November 2025 guide.
- Consider powder when: you can find a suitable product and prefer to measure the dose, while recognizing that Consumer Reports did not include powder in its latest cited tests.
- For short cycles: Consumer Reports says some hard-pressed powder tablets can take longer to dissolve and may not dissolve fully in short washes. It says pods in soluble film usually dissolve completely even in a short wash, though that is general guidance rather than a guarantee for every product or appliance.
If a pod is left partly undissolved, Consumer Reports’ buying guide advises checking that both your hands and the dispenser are dry before loading it. Follow the detergent and dishwasher makers’ directions for dose and use.
Do not use laundry detergent in a dishwasher
Laundry detergent is not a substitute for dishwasher detergent. Consumer Reports warns that laundry detergent can produce excess suds that interfere with spray and may damage the appliance. It may also leave residue and does not have the same food-targeting enzyme profile described for dishwasher detergent. Use a product labeled for automatic dishwashers.

What “3-in-1” and “4-in-1” mean
Those labels do not follow an industry-wide standard for which ingredients or functions a detergent must include. Consumer Reports’ November 12, 2025 buying guide says formulations vary by brand. Treat the labels as marketing descriptions: check the product’s specific claims and, where available, independent test results for cleaning, haze, and spotting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did my dishwasher pod not dissolve?
A partly undissolved pod can be related to the cycle and how it was loaded. Consumer Reports says some hard-pressed powder tablets may take longer to dissolve on short cycles; for a partly undissolved pod, its buying guide advises ensuring both hands and the dispenser are dry before loading.
