A portable drill guide sits on the workpiece and helps guide the drill; a collar-mounted drill stand holds a compatible drill on a fixed column. Both can make it easier to control a hand drill, but neither should be assumed to perform like a benchtop drill press or to deliver a verified level of accuracy.
What “drill press stand for a hand drill” can mean
Searches for a “stand for hand drill” or “portable drill press for cordless drill” can refer to two different tools. A portable drill guide, also called a mobile drilling aid, rests on the work and guides a hand drill through a sliding head. A collar-mounted drill stand holds a drill by its neck on a column, typically in a more stationary workbench setup.
These categories are not interchangeable. Portable guides may accommodate a range of angles or stock shapes, while a column stand depends on a drill with the specified collar. Check the attachment method before comparing other features.
How to choose: fit, support, and the feature you need
Confirm how the drill mounts
Mounting systems vary. The Milescraft 1318 DrillMate is described as a portable drill guide; the WEN WA1412 attaches to a standard 1/4-inch hex shank; and the wolfcraft 5027000 Drill Stand requires a drill with a 43 mm Euronorm collar. Match the support to your work
Stability comes from the whole setup, not just the guide. A non-slip base, mounting holes or secure bench attachment, a rigid guided slide, and a firmly held workpiece all matter. For round stock, a V-groove can help locate the material; it does not replace clamping or other secure workholding. Separate angle setting from depth control
An angle adjustment helps set the drilling direction; a depth stop limits how far the bit travels. One does not imply the other. If you need repeatable hole depth, look for an explicit depth setting or stop. If you need angled holes, compare the stated angle range and how the guide is adjusted.

Check chuck capacity and intended drill type
The chuck determines which bit shanks the guide can hold. Milescraft’s 1318 product page describes a 3/8-inch keyed chuck, while its 2025 catalog specifies a 1/2-inch chuck for the 1348 DrillMatePRO. WEN lists a 1/2-inch keyed chuck on the WA1412. Match that capacity to the bits and work you plan to do; do not assume a larger chuck by model family or appearance. What the stated features do—and do not—tell you
For portable, angled work
The 1318 DrillMate lists a self-centering base, V-groove, non-slip feet, and angle positions at 45°, 60°, 75°, and 90°. The DrillMatePRO lists adjustment from 0° to 60°, a depth setting, and a 1/2-inch chuck in Milescraft’s 2025 catalog. The WEN WA1412 lists adjustment to 60° either direction, a depth stop, mounting holes, and a 1/2-inch chuck. Compare the stated ranges and depth features against the task; the listings do not establish how accurately each guide drills in practice.
Milescraft describes the 1318 this way: “This portable drill guide makes it quick and easy to drill precise holes at multiple angles.” That is manufacturer product copy, not an independently verified test result. [Milescraft 1318]

For a fixed column setup
The wolfcraft 5027000 is the more explicitly stationary option among these examples: its listed 43 mm Euronorm collar fit, 40 mm column, toothed rack, depth stop, and 80 mm maximum working stroke describe a column-based setup. It is not a universal stand for cordless drills; the drill must have the matching collar. Set up the guide for controlled drilling
- Check fit before loading a bit. Identify whether the guide takes a hex shank, a drill in a specified arrangement, or a 43 mm collar. Confirm that your drill and the guide’s chuck or holder match.
- Secure the guide and workpiece. Use the guide’s mounting holes or a suitable bench attachment where provided, and clamp or otherwise firmly support the work. Do not rely on a hand holding round stock in a V-groove.
- Set the required angle and depth separately. Use the angle adjustment for direction and a listed depth stop or setting for travel. If the guide does not specify the control you need, do not assume it has one.
- Check the bit and clearance. Confirm the bit shank fits the chuck and that the work and base are supported through the intended drilling path.
- Drill with controlled pressure. Keep the guide seated and the work restrained; stop if the setup shifts, binds, or loses alignment.
Common buying mistakes to avoid
- Buying by the word “stand” alone: determine whether you need a portable guide sitting on the work or a column stand holding the drill.
- Assuming cordless-drill compatibility: cordless models may not have the collar or attachment a particular stand requires.
- Choosing by angle range while ignoring depth: angled drilling and repeatable depth are different capabilities.
- Ignoring chuck size: a guide may not accept the bit shank needed for the job.
- Treating specifications as an accuracy ranking: listed construction features do not substitute for independent comparative testing.
