For occasional warmth where people sit, a portable infrared panel can provide targeted radiant heat; for regular whole-space heating, compare a professionally assessed fixed system or heat pump with portable electric options. The right choice depends on the conservatory’s glazing, insulation, size, draughts, how often you use it and the controls available—not a generic wattage rule.
Start with how you use the conservatory
A conservatory used for an hour on a cold evening has different needs from one expected to stay comfortable throughout the day. Before choosing a heater, decide whether you need to warm a person or seating area, warm the air quickly, or maintain heat across the whole space on a regular schedule.
- Occasional, targeted warmth: A portable infrared panel may suit a seating area if the people using it are in the panel’s direct path.
- Quick warm air: A fan or convector heater may be useful when rapid air heating matters, though the fan’s noise and airflow may not suit everyone.
- Regular or whole-space heating: Ask a heating professional whether a fixed installation or a heat pump can be designed appropriately for the conservatory and the wider home.
Compare not just the heater’s purchase and installation needs, but also where it delivers warmth, how its controls schedule operation, how much electricity it uses in your circumstances, and what safety measures it requires.
Which conservatory heater types are worth comparing?
| Heater type | How it delivers heat | When to consider it | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Portable infrared panel | Radiant heat warms people and surfaces in its path rather than primarily warming the surrounding air. | As a top-up for a particular seating or working area. | Whether the intended area is in direct view, the manufacturer’s placement instructions, and the model’s controls and safety features. |
| Portable oil-filled electric radiator | Heats the room through an electric radiator; it is a common portable heater category. | When you want a portable heater and are comparing models with thermostats or timers. | Output, thermostat, timer, overheat cut-out, tip-over protection and the maker’s instructions. Electrical Safety First identifies oil-filled radiators as a relatively lower-risk choice if someone chooses to leave a heater on while asleep; that is not a substitute for its full safety advice or the product manual. |
| Fan or convector heater | A fan heater warms air and forces it into the room; convector heaters are another portable-heater category. | When quicker delivery of warm air is useful. | Noise, airflow, required clearances, controls and the maker’s supervision instructions. |
| Fixed infrared panel | A wall- or ceiling-mounted panel provides radiant heat; some installations require an electrician. | When you want a planned fixed installation rather than moving a portable heater around. | Property-specific panel number and placement, wiring, controls and installation advice. Energy Saving Trust recommends getting independent advice for whole-home infrared use and comparing installer quotes. |
| Heat pump | Transfers heat from outdoor air or the ground into a building. | When considering regular heating as part of a designed system for the home. | Whether the conservatory can be included, and what insulation, heat emitters or installation changes would be needed. Suitability depends on the property and system design. |
How running cost and efficiency compare
A heater’s running cost depends on its power, the amount of time it runs, the controls used and the energy price that applies to your home. Without a conservatory-specific heat-loss assessment and your tariff, a generic wattage or cost figure cannot tell you what a particular room will cost to heat.

Energy Saving Trust says electricity costs about four times as much as gas for the same amount of energy. It also says heat pumps typically use two to four times less electricity than infrared heating to produce the same amount of heat. These are broad comparisons, not a bill estimate or a guarantee of savings in a particular conservatory. See Energy Saving Trust’s infrared heating guidance.
For wall panels designed for homes, Energy Saving Trust gives a typical range of 350 to 900 watts and notes that some rooms may need more than one panel. That range is not a conservatory sizing formula: do not use it to select a panel output for a glazed extension.

The Centre for Sustainable Energy says switching from gas to a heat pump could cut heating emissions by up to 70%. This is a possible emissions reduction, not a guaranteed household saving; the outcome depends on the system and property. Its electric-heating guidance explains the broader context. Energy Saving Trust notes that heating and hot water account for over half of most UK energy bills, but that general household figure does not indicate a conservatory’s share. See its heating systems guidance.
Why infrared may feel different from a radiator
Infrared warms surfaces and people in its path; conventional radiators mainly warm surrounding air, which then circulates. That makes infrared a possible choice for targeted warmth, especially if you spend time in one area. It does not establish that infrared is always cheaper or more comfortable: room layout, glazing, insulation, controls and use patterns all matter.

Energy Saving Trust warns that relying on infrared to keep air temperatures lower can leave colder surfaces and cold spots, which may contribute to condensation, damp or mould. Keep ventilation in mind and check the conservatory for signs of moisture. The source’s detailed explanation is in its infrared heating advice.
Why conservatory-specific sizing matters
The sources cited here do not establish an official conservatory-specific heater sizing method, a reliable conservatory wattage, or a validated running-cost calculation. Glazing, insulation, dimensions, air leakage, desired temperature, use pattern and the home’s existing heating system can all affect the design, but generic room-heater figures do not quantify those factors for an individual conservatory.

If you plan regular whole-space heating or a fixed installation, ask a heating professional to assess the conservatory and explain the proposed output, placement, controls, electrical or system changes, and expected operation for your property. For a heat pump, include questions about how the conservatory fits into the designed system; the UK government’s heat-pump explainer describes how heat pumps transfer heat into buildings.
