Which detergent does Whirlpool recommend?
Whirlpool recommends high-quality premeasured tablets or packs. Its product-help guidance says they can reduce filming compared with powder, liquid, or gel and are suitable across different water-hardness and soil conditions. That is a recommendation about detergent format, not proof that one brand outperforms every other brand in every Whirlpool model. Whirlpool’s detergent guidance does not provide independent brand-by-brand test results.
Choose a product labeled for automatic dishwashers. Put a tablet or pack in the main detergent compartment unless your model’s manual specifies otherwise, and add it just before starting the cycle. Whirlpool’s owner’s manual states, “Use automatic dishwasher detergent only.” The cited Whirlpool owner’s manual is model-specific; check your own manual for dispenser instructions.

Whirlpool discusses powder in hard-water contexts as well as recommending packs in its product-help guidance. These are not reasons to ignore your model’s instructions: use the manual and detergent label to decide the form and dose for your dishwasher and water conditions. How much detergent should you use?
There is no single dose that fits every Whirlpool dishwasher, detergent type, load, and water supply. For powder, Whirlpool’s manual says the needed amount depends on how soiled the dishes are and on water hardness: heavily soiled loads need more, while excessive detergent in soft water can etch glassware. Use the detergent package directions alongside your exact model manual rather than applying a generic measurement.
Whirlpool’s product-help page gives approximately 8 cubic centimeters as the capacity of a full, level prewash indicator in the cited dispenser guidance. That figure describes the prewash indicator, not a universal dose for the main detergent compartment. Dispenser arrangements vary by model; consult your manual before using that measurement. Whirlpool’s guidance on detergent type and amount also recommends fresh detergent, stored in a tightly closed container in a cool, dry place.

Should you use rinse aid?
Rinse aid is a companion to detergent, not a replacement for it. Whirlpool says it helps water drain from dishes more readily, improving drying and reducing water spots and filming. Its guidance recommends liquid rinse aid in the dispenser even when you use detergent packets; some packs contain rinse aid, but that does not make every pack equivalent to filling the dispenser. Check your manual for the dispenser location and settings. Whirlpool’s rinse-aid instructions say a full dispenser holds approximately 5 oz (150–175 mL) and lasts about a month, though actual duration varies with use and model.

- Dose and water conditions: Follow the label and manual. Water hardness and load soil affect the appropriate amount, particularly for powder.
- Rinse aid: If drying, spots, or filming are the concern, check the rinse-aid dispenser and model instructions.
Whirlpool describes water at 15 grains per U.S. gallon or more as extremely hard; at that level, it says good results can be difficult and the water can damage a dishwasher. The product-help page does not date this figure, so treat it as Whirlpool’s stated threshold, not a measurement of your household water. If you suspect very hard water, check your water supply and consult the dishwasher manual. Whirlpool’s detergent and water-hardness guidance provides the appliance-specific context.

How to choose for your Whirlpool model
- Find the model number and open its owner’s manual. Use the manual’s instructions for detergent placement, dispenser operation, rinse aid, and any model-specific settings.
- Choose automatic-dishwasher detergent. A high-quality tablet or pack is Whirlpool’s recommended starting format; never substitute hand dish soap.
- Follow both sets of directions. Use the detergent package for product-specific dosing and the manual for your dishwasher’s dispenser and cycle guidance.
- Adjust only with the relevant conditions in mind. Soil level and water hardness affect powder dosing; do not assume a larger dose will improve cleaning.
- Add rinse aid if drying or spotting is an issue. Fill and adjust its dispenser as directed for your model.
