For greasy or detergent residue, use a machine cleaner that your dishwasher’s manufacturer says is compatible; Bosch recommends its cleaner for greasy residue, and Whirlpool recommends affresh Dishwasher Cleaner every 30 days for its guidance. But first clean the filter and check for trapped debris and drainage problems: a cleaner will not fix a blocked filter or a dishwasher that cannot drain.
Choose a cleaner for the problem you have
There is no evidence here that one product is universally best for every dishwasher or that cleaner alone cures every odor. Match the product to the buildup and follow both the appliance manual and the product label.

When comparing products, check intended use, compatibility with your appliance, application and cycle instructions, package frequency, and model-specific cautions. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish that all cleaners perform alike.
Remove common odor sources before running a cleaner
Clean the filter
Food particles can collect in the filter and cause a bad smell. Bosch advises removing and washing the filter with water, soap, and a soft brush. Filter designs and removal steps vary, so consult your owner’s manual and do not force a part that will not release as described.

Check spray arms and wipe accessible residue
Inspect spray-arm openings for debris and clear them only by the method approved for your model. Wipe accessible food or drink residue from the interior, door edges, and seals; Miele advises wiping seals and door residue regularly. Use the manual for any parts that need removal.
Check that wastewater drains
A restricted drain or kinked or damaged hose can leave waste water in the system or allow it to return. Check accessible drainage areas and the hose for an obvious restriction or kink, following the appliance instructions. If the dishwasher continues to fail to drain, contact manufacturer support or a qualified service provider rather than repeatedly adding cleaner.

Use the maintenance schedule for your model and region
Manufacturer schedules are not identical. Bosch’s UK guidance suggests a maintenance wash every 4–6 months depending on use; Whirlpool’s Product Help recommends affresh Dishwasher Cleaner every 30 days. These are recommendations from different manufacturers and regions, not interchangeable instructions for every dishwasher. Follow your manual and the cleaner’s package directions for your appliance.
Be careful with vinegar and other home remedies
Do not assume a home remedy is safe for every machine. LG provides specific citric-acid and vinegar instructions for supported models and warns that excessive vinegar may damage the appliance. Use those directions only if they apply to your model; otherwise, follow the appliance manual.

When cleaning does not solve the smell
If odor persists after removing residue and using a compatible cleaner as directed, look again for standing water or a drainage fault. Continued drainage trouble needs support or service, not another cleaning cycle. If there is no drainage issue but the smell remains, consult your manufacturer’s troubleshooting guidance for the model.
