For a Whirlpool high-efficiency washer, choose detergent labeled HE and dose it according to both your washer’s manual and the detergent’s directions. Whirlpool says about two tablespoons is a usual amount for a normal-sized HE load, but concentration, load size and soil level can change the right dose. Whirlpool recommends its Swash detergent, but its guidance does not establish one brand as best for every Whirlpool washer or load.
What is the best detergent for a Whirlpool washing machine?
The best fit is an HE-labeled detergent if your Whirlpool washer requires HE detergent. Whirlpool explains that HE detergent is designed for low-water washing and produces fewer suds; check the manual for your exact model, since dispenser features and instructions vary. Whirlpool’s HE detergent guide and your model’s owner manual are the practical starting points.
Whirlpool recommends Swash and describes it as suitable for HE and non-HE washers. That is the manufacturer’s recommendation, not an independent comparison showing Swash cleans better than other compatible detergents. Choose among HE-labeled products by checking their dose directions, concentration and suitability for your laundry. Whirlpool’s detergent-use guidance also emphasizes following the detergent maker’s directions.
How much detergent should you use?
Start with the detergent label and the washer manual; do not assume a full cap is the right amount. Whirlpool gives about two tablespoons as a usual amount for a normal-sized HE load, but it is a reference point, not a universal dose. Products vary in concentration, and the amount should reflect load size and soil level. Whirlpool’s guidance discusses products labeled 2x, 4x and 8x concentrated, so the same volume does not apply to every bottle.

Too much detergent can create excess suds, lengthen cycles, interfere with rinsing and result in poor cleaning. If you see persistent suds or poor rinsing, review the product directions and model manual before increasing the dose. Whirlpool’s HE detergent use article explains these dosing concerns.
Can you use regular detergent in a Whirlpool HE washer?
Use HE detergent when the washer’s manual calls for it; do not substitute regular non-HE detergent. Whirlpool warns that non-HE detergent can produce excess suds in an HE washer. In the W11355369 Rev F manual, Whirlpool says non-HE detergent may lengthen cycles and reduce rinsing performance, and may contribute to component failure or mold or mildew buildup over time. Those warnings come from that manual and should not be read as guaranteed outcomes for every Whirlpool model.

The manual describes HE detergents as “low-sudsing and quick-dispersing” to produce the right amount of suds for the best performance. Check the manual for your specific washer rather than assuming identical wording or requirements across all models. Whirlpool owner manual W11355369 Rev F.
Should you choose liquid, powder or pods?
No detergent form is a universal winner. Whirlpool’s guidance suggests matching the form to the laundry and the washer’s instructions:

Where do you put detergent pods?
Whirlpool’s general direction is to put a pod in the empty washer drum before loading clothes. Do not place it in a dispenser unless your model’s manual specifically instructs you to do so. Dispenser designs and instructions can vary, so consult the manual for your washer before relying on a general rule. Whirlpool’s pod and detergent-form guidance gives the general placement advice.

How should you compare HE detergents?
- HE labeling: Confirm the package carries the HE mark if your manual requires HE detergent.
- Concentration and dose: Follow the specific product’s directions rather than treating cap markings or another product’s dose as standard.
- Laundry needs: Consider whether powder, liquid or a pod better fits the stains and handling preferences described above.
- Dispenser compatibility: Check the manual if your washer has a detergent drawer or bulk-dispensing feature; settings and dispensing instructions are model-specific.
Keep washer cleaning separate from detergent choice
Detergent selection does not replace washer maintenance. Whirlpool advises monthly cleaning with the Clean Washer cycle and affresh washer cleaner, or another cleaning method allowed by the owner’s manual.
