Power trowels suit appropriate machine-finishing work. No tool alone guarantees a flawless surface; preparation, placement, timing, jointing, curing, and operator skill matter too.
Choose tools by the finishing operation
Concrete finishing is a sequence, not a single-tool task. ACI’s flatwork finisher task analysis and Slabs on Ground publication contents identify work ranging from spreading and strike-off to floating, troweling, edging, and jointing.
| Operation | Tool | How to choose |
|---|---|---|
| Strike off | Hand screed or straightedge; powered or laser screed for suitable larger or tolerance-sensitive work | Match the tool and method to slab size, access, grade or flatness specification, and available crew and equipment. |
| Early smoothing | Bull float or darby | Consider the surface area, reach, blade material, and compatibility with the handle system. |
| Shape edges | Edger | Choose the edge profile and tool suited to the slab detail. |
| Form tooled joints | Groover or jointer | Follow the joint layout and specified groove profile. |
| Hand finishing | Hand float, finishing trowel, or margin trowel | Select for the operation and intended finish; floats and trowels are not interchangeable. |
| Machine finishing | Power trowel | Consider slab size, access, operator skill, and the specified surface. |
| Decorative finishing | Stamping mats, stencils, dry-shake spreaders, brushes, rollers, or sprayers | Use equipment specific to the chosen decorative method and material system. |
What tools do I need to finish concrete?
Start with a screed or straightedge
A screed or straightedge strikes off freshly placed concrete and helps establish the initial surface plane. Choose its dimensions and method for the slab and the required tolerances. A straightedge is not a substitute for a specified grade or flatness plan.
Use a bull float or darby for early smoothing
After strike-off, a bull float or darby smooths the surface early in the sequence. It does not replace later floating or troweling. The choice depends on the area, reach required, and the blade and handle system suited to the work.

Separate edge and joint tools
An edger shapes slab edges; a groover or jointer creates tooled joints. They perform different jobs, so choose each to match the edge detail or joint layout rather than treating them as interchangeable accessories.
Choose floats and trowels for their distinct jobs
Hand floats and hand trowels serve different finishing operations. ACI’s finisher certification task analysis expects workers to identify both tool types and distinguish float blades from trowel blades. A margin trowel can be useful for detail work, but it does not replace the tools used across the main slab.

Reserve power trowels for suitable work
A power trowel is a machine-finishing tool, not a universal upgrade for every patio, driveway, or small slab. Slab scale, equipment access, operator capability, and the specified surface should guide whether machine finishing is appropriate.
When should each tool be used?
- Spread and strike off. Place and distribute the concrete, then use the screed or straightedge to establish the initial plane.
- Bull float or darby early. Smooth after strike-off as part of the initial operation.
- Wait for the concrete’s condition to suit later work. Edging, grooving, floating, and troweling follow the early operations; do not assume a universal number of minutes.
- Complete the specified finish and details. Use the appropriate edging, jointing, floating, troweling, or decorative tools for the work.
- Address joints and curing as part of the job. Tool selection does not replace the project’s jointing and curing requirements.
ACI’s portal abstract for J. C. Yeager’s 1973 article, Concrete Finishing Practices, states: “It is important that the first operation of spreading, screeding, and darbying (or bullfloating) be completed before any bleeding of the concrete takes place.” The abstract also says to allow a lapse before later operations, but it gives no universal wait time. Concrete behavior and site conditions determine when the surface is ready for the next step. Read the ACI abstract.

Do decorative finishes need different tools?
Yes. Decorative methods can call for specialist equipment such as stamping mats, stencils, dry-shake spreaders, brushes, rollers, or sprayers. Those tools apply to particular decorative methods and material systems; they are not part of every basic slab tool set. ACI’s decorative concrete flatwork publication listing and contents covers this specialized work.
How to choose without overbuying
- Write down the required operations first: strike-off, early smoothing, edges, joints, hand finishing, machine finishing, or decoration.
- Match tool size and reach to the slab and the crew’s access to it.
- Check that handles and blades are compatible where systems require it.
- Use powered equipment only when the slab, access, finish specification, and operator capability support it.
- Do not buy a kit on the assumption that it covers every finish. There is no single universal tool set for all slabs.
No comparative product testing, dimensions, durability findings, current prices, or availability are established here, so a particular brand or model cannot be ranked as “best.” Choose by task, finish, slab scale, access, and operator capability.
