For reusable food storage, microwave-safe glass containers are a practical category to consider—but suitability depends on the particular container and its lid, not just the material.
What makes a container suitable for microwave use?
Check the container’s microwave-safe label and follow its directions, along with the instructions for your microwave. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) notes that glass, paper, ceramic, and plastic containers are used in microwave cooking because microwaves pass through these materials. That does not mean every item made from one of them is suitable for every microwave use. FDA microwave oven guidance recommends following the instructions provided with the microwave and the item.
Food can make a container hot as it cooks. Choose a size and shape that suit the portion, and handle the container carefully when removing it. Check lid directions separately: a container’s microwave-safe labeling does not automatically establish that its lid is also approved for microwave use.
Compare common container choices
| Choice | What to check | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Glass food storage container | Look for microwave-safe labeling and check the lid’s directions separately. | Glass is used in microwave cooking, but not every glass product or lid is necessarily suitable. FDA guidance |
| Plastic food container | Use it for heating only if the product specifies microwave-safe use and its directions permit it. | Some plastic containers can melt from the heat of the food. The FDA says plastic tableware without a microwave-safe specification should not be used to heat food or drinks. FDA melamine tableware Q&A |
| Ceramic cookware | Check that the specific item specifies microwave-safe use. | Material alone does not establish suitability; the FDA advises using only ceramic or other cookware that specifies microwave-safe use in its melamine guidance. FDA melamine tableware Q&A |
| Melamine dinnerware | Do not use it to heat food or drinks in a microwave. | The FDA says food and drinks should not be heated on melamine-based dinnerware in microwave ovens. FDA melamine tableware Q&A |
How to choose a container for your needs
- Confirm the intended use. Find the microwave-safe marking or instructions for the exact item. If they do not specify microwave use, do not assume it is suitable.
- Check the lid independently. Follow its own instructions; remove it for heating if its directions do not permit microwave use.
- Match the size and shape to the portion. Choose a container that fits the food you plan to heat and can be handled carefully when hot.
- Consider storage and cleaning. Pick a shape and capacity that work for how you store and wash the container, while keeping microwave directions as the deciding factor for heating.
Why microwave-safe labeling matters
Microwaves pass through several common container materials, but the food heats the container during cooking. Some plastic containers can melt from that heat. The FDA advises against heating food or drinks on melamine-based dinnerware and says plastic tableware without a microwave-safe specification should not be used for heating. These are U.S. FDA recommendations; check the instructions for the specific item and appliance.

The FDA also describes migration information and toxicological data as part of food-contact safety assessment. Its guidance gives recommended migration-testing conditions for articles proposed specifically as microwave containers: 130 °C (266 °F) for 15 minutes in a food oil or fatty-food simulant, and 100 °C (212 °F) for 15 minutes in an aqueous-food simulant. Those are industry testing conditions, not a consumer test or a temperature limit for every household container. See the FDA’s food contact substances guidance.
