What to compare before choosing a combination ladder
- Configuration: Confirm the ladder supports the position you need. Combination ladders do not all offer the same modes.
- Reach and standing height: Match the ladder to the task using the manufacturer’s figures for the selected model and setup. “Size,” extended length, standing height, working height and maximum reach are not interchangeable.
- Load rating: Include the user and anything carried, such as tools and materials. Rating systems and units vary, so compare like with like and follow the model’s stated limit.
- Stability and contact features: Check for features suited to the work area, such as stabiliser bars, a flared base, locking hinges, wall-contact pads or replaceable feet. These features do not replace correct setup.
- Handling and storage: Consider the ladder’s weight, folded dimensions and adjustment method alongside who will move it and where it will be stored.

Little Giant explains that its stated size convention does not account for overlap in sliding sections and advises buyers to consider maximum reach. Lyte’s LCL table distinguishes open height, maximum standing height and approximate working height. Those are different measurements; use the manufacturer’s explanation and instructions to determine which figure applies to your task.
