If you want chewable ice at home, look for a countertop nugget or pellet ice maker. GE describes its Opal ice as chewable nuggets made from compacted flakes, but machines sold as nugget, pellet, or chewable ice makers may not produce identical textures. The available specifications here document GE Opal models; they do not establish an independently tested winner or a head-to-head comparison of brands.
What to compare before you buy
Daily production, ice storage, and water capacity answer different questions. Use the exact model’s published specifications and care instructions rather than assuming that a category label guarantees a particular texture or performance.
- Counter space: Compare the appliance’s listed dimensions with your available counter area. Measure height under cabinets as well as width and depth, and consult the model’s manual for required ventilation or installation clearances. Product dimensions alone are not clearance recommendations.
- Production and storage: A pounds-per-day figure is a production claim; bin capacity is how much ice the machine stores at once. Do not treat a bin as if it holds a day’s production.
- Water refills: Check whether the model uses a built-in reservoir or supports an optional side tank. GE says select Opal configurations with a side tank increase capacity and reduce refill frequency.
- Controls and connectivity: Compare features listed for the exact model, including any app or voice control, and decide whether you will use them.
- Cleaning: Check the official instructions for the particular model, including cleaning-cycle steps and descaling guidance for your water hardness.
Documented GE Opal examples
These are manufacturer-published specifications, not results from independent testing. GE’s stated production figures are conditional claims, not guarantees of what a household will make in ordinary use.

GE calls Opal a countertop nugget ice maker and describes its ice as chewable nuggets made from compacted flakes. Its product page also uses promotional language describing the ice as “chewable, crunchable, craveable” and saying it retains flavor unlike traditional hard cubes; that is GE’s claim, not an independently tested comparison. Plan for cleaning and descaling
Cleaning is part of owning a nugget ice maker. GE says procedures vary by Opal model and recommends following the instructions for the exact machine. For the Opal models covered by its support guidance, GE bases descaling intervals on water hardness:
