The best cassette toilet chemical depends on where you empty the waste tank: Thetford positions Aqua Kem Blue for use where proper sewage treatment is available, and Aqua Kem Green for septic-tank use. Check the dump point’s rules and the product label before choosing. These are manufacturer recommendations, not results from independent comparative testing.
How to choose a cassette toilet chemical
Start with the disposal site, then choose a format and follow its dosing instructions. A chemical intended for the waste-holding tank is different from an additive for flush water or a routine toilet cleaner; Thetford separates those categories in its toilet-care guidance.
- Check disposal rules: Follow the dump point’s instructions even when a product is described as septic-tank safe.
- Confirm compatibility: Check your toilet manual and the chemical label. Manufacturer guidance for a Thetford product does not establish compatibility with every cassette toilet.
- Choose a format: Liquid and concentrated products need label-directed measuring; sachets are pre-dosed.
- Set expectations: Thetford’s stated duration is guidance, not a guaranteed odor-free interval for every use pattern.
Which Thetford additive suits your disposal setup?
Aqua Kem Blue: for proper sewage treatment facilities
Thetford describes Aqua Kem Blue as a waste-tank toilet fluid for motorhomes, caravans, and boats, compatible with cassette and portable toilets. The company says it controls odor, liquefies waste, and reduces gas build-up. Its care guidance positions Blue for locations with proper sewage treatment facilities. See the Aqua Kem Blue product information and confirm that your disposal point accepts it.
Aqua Kem Green Concentrated: for septic-tank use
Thetford describes Aqua Kem Green Concentrated as an additive for cassette and portable toilet waste tanks, with odor control, waste liquefaction, and reduced gas build-up among its stated benefits. The company calls it “Septic tank safe” and says that claim is based on an anaerobic biodegradability test. That claim applies to the named product; do not assume every product with “green” in its name has the same properties. Check Aqua Kem Green Concentrated’s product details and the local site’s rules.

Compare formats and stated duration
| Option | Format and dosing | Thetford’s stated duration |
|---|---|---|
| Aqua Kem Blue | Liquid waste-tank additive; measure according to the label. | Up to five days per dose, according to Thetford’s product catalogue; not an independent comparative test. |
| Aqua Kem Green | Concentrated liquid waste-tank additive; measure according to the label. | Up to four days per dose, according to Thetford; not an independent comparative test. |
| Aqua Kem Blue Sachets | Water-soluble, pre-dosed waste-tank additive. | Not stated in the cited catalogue entry. |
These are manufacturer-stated maximum durations, not a promise that odor will remain controlled for that long in every situation. Use the product label for the dose and replacement timing. Thetford lists Blue Sachets and related formats in its toilet-care catalogue; product range and availability vary by country. The catalogue’s international page lists Green Sachets as available from January 2027, so they should not be treated as currently available without checking local stock.

Thetford’s catalogue lists a cassette dump cap with an integrated measuring cup. The article number depends on toilet type, so verify the cap against your cassette model before buying. A pre-dosed sachet is an alternative if you prefer not to measure liquid.

Do not use domestic bleach in the toilet. Thetford Marine’s FAQ answers its question “Can I use domestic bleach in the toilet?” with: “No. It can damage the toilet.” The manufacturer notes that its toilets use plastic parts, seals, and foam. Follow your toilet manual and the chemical label, and use products intended for the relevant toilet components. See Thetford Marine’s FAQ.
A septic-safe claim does not override a campsite, marina, or dump station’s disposal instructions. Older manuals may describe disposal options that differ from current product labels or site rules; use current instructions for both the additive and the facility.
