Best 5-Ton Air Conditioners: Models to Compare and How to Choose

Compare current 5-ton Lennox, Goodman and Trane central AC options by capacity control, advertised SEER2, refrigerant and matched-system requirements. Start with a home-specific load calculation before choosing equipment.

A 5-ton air conditioner is the right choice only if a load calculation shows your home needs that capacity. For homeowners comparing U.S. residential central AC systems, current options include variable-capacity Lennox models, variable-speed Goodman equipment, and single-stage Goodman and Trane models. Their advertised efficiency ceilings are not directly comparable guarantees: the exact indoor-and-outdoor system match matters.

Start with the home’s cooling load, not a tonnage rule

A 5-ton label describes equipment capacity; it does not show that the equipment is right for your house. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Building Science Education resource says rules of thumb are often used to size comfort systems, resulting in excessive oversizing, and identifies ACCA Manual J as a method contractors use to calculate heating and cooling loads. Ask for a home-specific calculation rather than relying on floor area alone. DOE Building Science Education: Heating and Cooling Loads

Oversizing can raise costs, waste energy, and reduce comfort and efficiency through short cycling. The equipment, including the duct system, should be selected to serve the calculated loads.

5-ton models and product families to compare

The following is an evidence-based shortlist, not a tested ranking. The manufacturer figures are advertised maximums or family-level information; they do not establish the efficiency of every 5-ton installed system.

Option Capacity and control Published efficiency Refrigerant and comparison notes
Lennox SL25KCV-060-230 Specific 5-ton variable-capacity model; Lennox says its output can adjust in small increments. Up to 22.50 SEER2. R-454B. Lennox cautions that actual efficiency depends on the matched system and other factors. Lennox product details
Lennox EL18KCV-060-230 Specific 5-ton variable-capacity model. Up to 19.50 SEER2. R-454B. Compare the exact indoor match, controls, installation scope, and warranty. Lennox product details
Goodman GXV6S Variable-speed, inverter-driven split-system family; manufacturer lists a 1.5–5-ton range. The page also describes communicating controls and quiet-mode features. Up to 17.2 SEER2 for the family. The cited page does not establish the exact rating of a 5-ton matched system. Request the specific model numbers and AHRI certificate. Goodman GXV6S product details
Trane Choice 14 Single-Stage Single-stage; listed 5-ton models include 5TTR4060A1000A and 5TTA4060A3000A / 5TTA4060A4000A. Trane’s companion article gives up to 14.3 SEER2 for the 14 single-stage product line, not an exact matched 5-ton system rating. R-454B shown on the product page. Verify the current efficiency and indoor match in the AHRI Directory. Trane Choice 14 product details and Trane’s air-conditioner overview
Goodman GLXS4B Single-stage split-system family; manufacturer lists a 1.5–5-ton range. Up to 15.2 SEER2 for the family. R-32. The page includes representative specifications; do not treat the family maximum as the exact rating of a 5-ton match. Confirm the combination and warranty terms. Goodman GLXS4B product details

Manufacturer product pages establish specifications, not a universal winner. No consistent installed-price comparison, hands-on product test, long-term reliability dataset, or consumer-review analysis is available for ranking these choices. The cited evidence also does not support calling one option the best value based on its efficiency ceiling alone.

Compare matched-system efficiency, not just the outdoor unit

SEER2 is the current seasonal cooling-efficiency metric described in the U.S. Department of Energy’s residential purchasing guidance. A published maximum can help narrow options, but it is not a promise that every combination will achieve that figure. Compare the exact proposed outdoor unit, indoor coil or air handler, furnace where applicable, and controls as a matched system. DOE FEMP residential central air-conditioner guidance

Ask the contractor for the matched system’s AHRI certificate and use the AHRI Directory to check its rating. DOE FEMP also points consumers to ENERGY STAR and the CEE-AHRI Directory when checking qualified equipment and regional efficiency criteria. Any modeled savings on a guidance page depend on its assumptions and should not be treated as a forecast for a particular home.

Choose the control style that fits your priorities

Variable-capacity and variable-speed options

The Lennox SL25KCV and EL18KCV are variable-capacity models; the Goodman GXV6S family is variable-speed and inverter-driven. These approaches can adjust output rather than operating only at one fixed stage. For the Lennox SL25KCV, the manufacturer specifically describes small-increment capacity adjustment. Ask the contractor how the proposed system’s controls and indoor equipment work together, and whether that matched configuration suits the home’s comfort needs.

Single-stage options

The cited Goodman GLXS4B and Trane Choice 14 options are single-stage. They are straightforward points of comparison when a proposal is focused on single-stage equipment. Compare their exact matched-system ratings and installed scope with the variable-capacity or variable-speed bids rather than comparing brand names alone.

Check refrigerant and the complete system configuration

The cited Lennox models and Trane Choice 14 examples list R-454B; Goodman GLXS4B lists R-32. Refrigerant is only one part of the proposed configuration. Have the contractor identify the exact outdoor model, indoor coil or air handler, furnace if included, controls, and refrigerant in writing. The GXV6S page is a family-level source and does not establish a specific 5-ton matched-system rating, so request its exact model combination and AHRI certificate.

Goodman GLXS3BN6010 5 Ton North-Region 13.4 SEER2 Class R-32 Air Conditioner Condenser – Individual Outdoor Unit – Replaces GSXN3N6010
  • INDIVIDUAL OUTDOOR A/C COMPONENT — Includes ONE air-conditioner condenser only; required indoor coil/air handler or furnace, thermostat, lineset and accessories are not included.
  • R-32 AIR CONDITIONER — 5-ton nominal outdoor cooling unit; Goodman publishes family efficiency of North-region 13.4 SEER2 class.
  • MATCHED-SYSTEM RATING — SEER2 and cooling performance are determined by the complete AHRI-rated system; confirm the approved indoor/outdoor match before purchase.
  • REPLACES LEGACY MODEL GSXN3N6010 — Replacement model is based on Goodman's official A2L/R-32 family transition and corresponding capacity/configuration nomenclature. A licensed HVAC professional should confirm the exact application, match and installation requirements before ordering.
  • REGIONAL EFFICIENCY NOTICE — North-region 13.4 SEER2 split A/C classification. Goodman states North-region units may be installed only in the U.S. North, U.S. territories and Puerto Rico and are prohibited from installation in the U.S. Southeast and Southwest. Verify destination and AHRI match before purchase.

Use a consistent scope when comparing contractor bids

Ask each contractor to document the same key items so differences in price or equipment are meaningful:

  • The home’s load calculation and the resulting equipment selection.
  • Exact outdoor and indoor model numbers, plus the AHRI certificate for the matched combination.
  • Proposed airflow settings and any duct changes required.
  • Refrigerant, controls, installation and startup scope, and warranty terms.
  • Total installed price and the contractor’s qualifications and service plan.

Compare bids on both equipment and work included. The cited product information does not provide a fair, consistent installed-price survey, so a model’s published SEER2 maximum alone cannot establish what a complete installation will cost.
