Hanging ordinary stage curtains starts with a stage-rated track and compatible runners—not a household curtain rail. The track’s support, the drape’s weight and dimensions, how it will be operated, and the space needed behind it all affect the design. Because overhead supports carry significant loads, a venue-specific design should be checked by qualified technical personnel; a fire curtain is a separate life-safety system.
Choose track and runners for stage use
Stage drapes are heavier and used differently from household curtains. An archived Strand Electric and Engineering Co. planning text distinguishes purpose-made stage track from domestic rail, describing the latter as unsuitable for the likely weight and not silent in use. That is historical guidance, not a current engineering specification, but it captures an important selection principle: use track designed for theatrical service rather than assuming a domestic rail will work. For a studio tab system, Theatrecrafts describes heavy-duty metal track with plastic wheeled runners attached to the curtain top. The track, runners, hooks, curtain and operating method need to be compatible as a system. Confirm the track’s documentation and suitability with its supplier and the venue’s technical team; the available guidance does not establish a universal capacity or product rating. Plan the support and operating arrangement
Track may be bracket-mounted to a suitable structure or suspended, depending on the venue and design. The archived Strand text describes both approaches and mentions operation by hauling rope, cable or winch. These are design options, not instructions for choosing fixings or calculating loads.

Before settling on a support arrangement, have the project’s technical personnel consider the building structure, track design, total curtain mass, support layout, operation and any nearby safety-curtain arrangement. A safe fixing schedule depends on site-specific information—such as structural drawings, measured loads and the track manufacturer’s installation requirements—not a general rule. Do not improvise overhead attachments or treat a historical planning text as an installation specification.
The same archived text notes that, in the safety-curtain arrangement it describes, the main tabs cannot be fixed to the proscenium wall and must be suspended. That detail is context-specific; it is not a substitute for the venue’s safety-curtain design or instructions.

Specify fullness and finished dimensions
Fullness is the extra fabric width gathered or pleated into a curtain relative to the width it covers when drawn across. The archived Strand text recommends 50% fullness for the draperies it describes, and an archived W.J. Furse brochure describes approximately 50% in its construction context. Ask the drapery supplier to specify the finished dimensions and fullness for the actual opening, track, fabric and intended look. Confirm how the curtain will stack when open as well as how much width it needs when closed; the finished design should suit both the stage picture and available space.

Allow for clearance and performer movement
Track position affects backstage storage and how performers move through the tabs. Theatrecrafts suggests a 1.5 m gap between a studio’s back wall and tab track as one possible arrangement supporting storage and performer crossover. It is a design suggestion for the studio context described, not a required or universally suitable clearance. Measure the actual room and consider the people, scenery and equipment that need to pass through.
A second curtain may help conceal a bare wall when performers pass through the tabs, according to the same guidance. Whether that is useful depends on the venue’s sightlines, layout and production needs.

Check fabric fire performance and care
Do not assume that an older curtain remains fire-retardant. Theatrecrafts distinguishes durable flame-retardant fabric, which it says can retain performance after washing; non-durable flame-retardant fabric, which may need re-treatment after washing; and inherently flame-retardant fabric. An archived Furse brochure says flameproofing does not last indefinitely, that cleaning can affect treatment, and that reprocessing every two to three years was appropriate in the context it described. This historical supplier advice is not a current universal maintenance interval. Keep ordinary stage drapes separate from a fire curtain
A safety curtain—also called a fire curtain in the United States—is a mechanical separation between the auditorium and the stage or back-of-house area. Ordinary tabs and stage drapes do not provide that life-safety function. The system’s installation, testing and maintenance must be handled under venue-specific arrangements by competent professionals in consultation with the local fire officer or safety team.
