For a complete beginner, a low pair of wooden handheld walking stilts is the simplest place to start. Each stilt is built around a pole, a foot tread and supporting pieces, with a stable contact at the ground. Start with the treads low and practice on clear, level ground with a spotter; a basic design is not a shortcut around the balance and coordination walking requires.

What basic stilts are—and what they are not

Basic wooden walking stilts are two poles with foot treads attached partway up. The walker holds the poles, places their feet on the treads and moves the stilts forward in deliberate steps. In one low-stilt project, rubber feet provide the ground contact, while bolts can be moved among pre-drilled positions to change tread height.

This is a different use from attached drywall stilts, which are specialized work equipment, and performance stilts, which serve a different activity and have different balance demands. A low wooden pair is an introductory option for walking practice, not a substitute for equipment designed for a particular trade or performance use.

How to begin practicing safely

Walking guidance from This Old House and Stilt Factory emphasizes a clear practice area, gradual adjustment and protective precautions. Neither source presents these measures as a guarantee against falls.

  • Classic Balance Toys: the stilts game helps children develop their sense of balance, coordination of limbs and courage; It can also as an outdoor activity tool or a team building training aid for adults, featuring both fun and physical activity
  1. Inspect the stilts first. Check that wooden parts are solid and free of splits, cracks or knots, as Stilt Factory recommends. Also check that the tread supports and ground-contact pieces are secure.
  2. Choose a suitable practice area. Use flat, open ground clear of obstacles and tripping hazards. Have a spotter nearby, following This Old House’s beginner advice.
  3. Keep the treads low to start. If the design allows adjustment, use its lowest suitable position rather than raising the treads before you are comfortable.
  4. Use protective equipment. Stilt Factory recommends head gear and knee pads. Treat these as precautions, not fall-proofing.
  5. Take short, deliberate steps. Allow time to adjust to the unfamiliar balance and movement. Look ahead toward your path rather than down at your feet, as This Old House advises.

Stop if a part feels loose, damaged or unstable, or if you cannot maintain control. The cited guidance does not establish a universal training progression or guarantee that any particular setup is safe for every person.

Build a simple low wooden pair

This Old House’s wooden-stilts project describes a low DIY pair using pine handrails as poles, poplar supports, bolted treads and rubber feet. Its listed materials are:

  • One pair of 1½-inch rubber feet

The listed tools are a saw, drill/driver, hammer, sander, tape measure, straightedge and pencil. The design uses pre-drilled positions so the tread height can be changed by moving the bolts. Follow the project’s measurements and assembly instructions rather than improvising structural changes; the materials list alone is not a complete build plan.

This Old House’s page, updated May 27, 2026, estimates the pictured project at $20–$25 and 1–2 hours, and rates its build skill 1 out of 5. These are the publisher’s estimates, not a current store quote or a tested commercial product rating; materials prices and availability can change. The page recommends the project for age 8 and up, which is that project’s recommendation, not a universal age standard for stilt use. It also cautions that learning to walk may be harder than assembling the stilts.

A different DIY approach

Make:’s Basic Stilts project describes a more fitted approach: measure the walker, determine footplate placement, secure shoes and attach bike-tire footings. It is a distinct design from the This Old House low-pole project; do not combine dimensions or components from the two plans as if they were one tested design. Make: also includes tool-safety guidance.

Buy a pair or make one?

Building makes sense if you have the woodworking tools and can follow a complete plan carefully. Buying may suit someone who does not want to cut, drill and assemble a pair. No commercial model is evaluated here, so there is no evidence-based model recommendation or claim that a store-bought pair is automatically safer than a DIY one.

Beka 08805 Traditional Wooden Stilts - Tall by Beka
  • Made in the USA!
  • Hard Maple from Minnesota & Wisconsin!
  • Built for Strength, as well as Beauty!
  • 4 different heights
  • Very Sturdy!

Whichever route you choose, prioritize sound construction, secure tread placement and stable ground contact. For a beginner, low treads and a pair intended for basic walking practice are more relevant than equipment made for drywall work or performance.

Construction-site rules are a separate issue

OSHA’s 1996 Federal Register discussion of the scaffold rule addresses workplace use, not recreational stilt walking. It says employees may wear stilts on scaffolds only on large-area scaffolds; where applicable, guardrail dimensions must be increased to offset stilt height. It also addresses flat, clear surfaces and proper maintenance of stilts. These provisions should not be treated as general recreational instructions or as a substitute for checking current codified requirements when assessing workplace compliance.
