The Arts and Crafts Bunk Bed Woodworking Plan is a downloadable WOOD Store design for two 39×75-inch twin mattresses. WOOD says each bed is 34¼ inches high and that the beds can be used separately as twin beds or stacked as bunks. The public summary does not provide the cut list or construction details, so obtain and follow the complete plan before buying materials or cutting wood.
What the plan is—and what the listing confirms
WOOD magazine identifies the design as featured in WOOD Issue 82, October 1995; its plan page was updated January 16, 2024. The published concept converts from two separate twin beds to a bunk configuration by inverting one bed onto the other and repositioning its plywood mattress support. WOOD magazine’s plan listing is the source for these specifications.
- Mattress size: 39×75 inches, the twin size specified by the listing.
- Height: 34¼ inches for each bed, as stated by WOOD.
- Configurations: two separate twin beds or stacked bunks, using the conversion described above.
A separate vendor lists project DP-00044 and describes a similar convertible concept, but it is a separate listing and does not confirm that its file matches WOOD Store’s plan. It notes that large-format printing is needed to preserve drawing scale. See the vendor listing if considering that version.
What you need before starting the build
The publicly available WOOD summary does not state the lumber species or stock dimensions, hardware, cut list, joinery, assembly sequence, or load rating. Those details cannot be safely inferred from the bed’s overall dimensions or appearance. Obtain the actual plan and use its drawings and instructions to determine materials, tools, and construction steps before starting.

Safety checks for a home-built bunk bed
In the United States, federal requirements distinguish adult bunk beds, covered by 16 CFR Part 1213, from children’s bunk beds, covered by 16 CFR Part 1513. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission describes requirements including guardrails on both sides of the upper bunk, limits on hazardous openings, and manufacturer testing and certification obligations. It states: “The tops of the guardrails must be no less than 5 inches above the top of the mattress.” CPSC Bunk Beds Business Guidance explains the requirements. A plan’s dimensions do not establish that a particular home-built bed has been tested or complies with those requirements.

For consumer safe-use advice in Canada, Health Canada says falls are the most common cause of bunk and loft bed injuries. Its guidance says not to allow children under six on the top bunk, to use a snugly fitted mattress, to keep guardrails at least five inches above the mattress, and to secure the ladder. The page details are dated May 11, 2026. Read Health Canada’s bunk and loft bed guidance. These recommendations are Canadian guidance; apply the requirements and advice relevant to your jurisdiction.
- Check the guardrails against the mattress that will actually be used; the five-inch measure is above the mattress top, not the bed frame.
- Follow the full plan for mattress support, openings, ladder attachment, and the connection between stacked beds. The public summary does not specify these construction details.
- Do not assume the design has been independently tested or certified. The cited public sources do not establish plan-specific compliance.
Choosing between twin beds and bunks
The plan offers two configurations, but the public listing does not provide comparative performance information. Consider the practical differences before building: separate beds occupy floor space in two locations; stacked bunks concentrate the footprint but require safe upper-bunk access, suitable guardrails, and adequate room above the top mattress. The mattress support must be positioned as the instructions specify when converting the arrangement.
