“Aromatic cedar” usually means eastern redcedar (Juniperus virginiana), a fragrant juniper whose heartwood is used for cedar chests and closet lining. Its scent has a long-standing reputation for repelling moths, but the USDA Forest Products Laboratory says that effect has not been scientifically demonstrated.
What is aromatic cedar?
Aromatic cedar is a common name for eastern redcedar, Juniperus virginiana. Its distinctive fragrance comes from oils in the heartwood, the darker inner wood used in many storage and woodworking applications. The USDA Forest Service describes the species and its wood uses in its eastern redcedar profile.
Is eastern redcedar a true cedar?
No. Despite its common name, eastern redcedar is a juniper in the cypress family, not a true cedar in the genus Cedrus. Iowa State University Extension and Virginia Cooperative Extension both clarify this naming distinction in their guides to eastern redcedar and Juniperus virginiana.
Does aromatic cedar repel moths?
Do not rely on aromatic cedar as proven moth control. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory’s Eastern Redcedar profile states: “The scent of the wood is said to be a natural insect repellent, although this has not been shown to be true scientifically”. That distinction matters: the wood’s fragrance and traditional reputation are real, but the source does not establish that cedar lining or a chest will prevent an infestation.

What is aromatic cedar wood used for?
The fragrant heartwood is commonly used for cedar chests, wardrobes, and closet-lining boards. Cedar boards intended for storage have traditionally been left unfinished so their scent can be released, according to the USDA Forest Products Laboratory. This is a material-use practice, not proof of pest-control performance.
Eastern redcedar also has broader woodworking and construction uses. USDA sources document applications including fenceposts, lumber, pencils, carvings, furniture, flooring, poles, boats, and paneling. For a closet project, “eastern red cedar closet lining boards” is a useful product description; for storage furniture, a cedar chest is another familiar use. In either case, the wood should be chosen for its material qualities and intended application, not as a guaranteed way to control moths.
