Make: reported that the basic bench took six hours to build; that figure does not include the drawers, shelves, and other later additions.
What is April’s Ultimate Shop Workbench?
Wilkerson built the bench while organizing a new shop. Its 4-by-8-foot top provided a place to work and temporarily hold tools and supplies while she prepared wall bins, shelves, and organizers. The scale makes it a substantial shop fixture, not a compact portable bench.
Make: described the basic build as taking six hours in its May 23, 2018 article, writing, “It only took her 6 hours to build the basic 4 x 8 bench.” That is a reported build time for the basic bench, not a guaranteed estimate for another builder or for the later storage work. What features did Wilkerson add?
Beyond the basic bench, Wilkerson added storage and shop organization features: drawers, shelving, screw box holders, pegs for clamps and tape, and a French cleat system for hardware bins. Her project page also notes French cleats at the ends of the bench and quick-release Rockler casters on the feet. The available descriptions do not establish that every addition was part of the six-hour build.

The caster detail is useful if you are considering mobility, but the sources do not identify a model number or establish that any particular current retail listing is the same caster kit.
Will a 4-by-8-foot bench fit your shop?
Start by checking the footprint against your available floor space, then account for clearance to move around the bench and handle the work you expect to do. A full-sheet-sized surface can suit projects that need broad support, but the sources do not provide comparative testing or demonstrate an advantage over other bench designs.

Think through storage and movement before committing to the layout. Under-bench drawers and shelves, side-mounted organization, French cleats, and casters all relate to how you use the surrounding shop. Decide which features solve a real need in your workflow rather than assuming every accessory is necessary.
What tools and materials are listed?
Wilkerson’s project page names a Triton track saw, Purebond plywood, a jobsite saw, Titebond Original Wood Glue, drills, an 18-gauge brad nailer, clamps, and a miter saw among the tools and materials. Wilker Do’s store listing displays the Ultimate DIY Workbench Plans for $9.99 in the listing accessed October 7, 2026. Prices and availability can change. Make: reported a US$10 plan price in 2018, which is a separate historical figure rather than a current price. Check the Wilker Do’s store listing.
The project page describes using a full sheet of 4-by-8-foot plywood for the top, but the accessible descriptions do not provide enough information to treat the named tools and materials as a complete shopping list or to supply construction dimensions beyond the overall 4-by-8-foot size.
